The Role
It was a very enjoyable and informative internship. The work environment at Citi is open and friendly with supervisors/others on the desks more than happy to give up their own time to interns. This, from what I have heard, is somewhat different to experiences at other banks. It is primarily this aspect that was most enjoyable, a feeling of genuine interest and willingness to help and teach from the employees around you.
The answer above probably covers this, but yes valued with regards to time investment by colleagues, but also valued for the work/projects you are given and the tangible impact that it can have on the functioning of the desk. It felt easy to quickly assimilate into the team and not feel like an outsider, feel valued and respected.
Guidance and support has been regular and effective. What has been very effective is having an MD as my supervisor who is able to offer excellent insight and guidance, but also having more junior members on the desk to help out when the MD is understandably busy, as such you get access to guidance and support at all levels and regardless of whether one individual is busy.
How busy you are varies in what you are doing but not in terms of volume. Fitting in work from the projects your supervisor has given you, to shadowing, to learning/reading, to the trading game and prep for presentations, there is always something that feels worthwhile to be doing, but never the expectation or necessity to stay late and end up feeling over worked.
It felt like responsibility was given straight away. The nature of the internship in the Markets division is that much of what employees do day to day, an intern is not allowed to do. Instead, responsibility was given by way of projects to improve the day to day functioning of the desk, various analysis etc. This was quite rewarding as the results of the projects are pretty tangible and often give you exposure reaching beyond your desk.
The training I received, skills I developed and understanding I gained will be invaluable going forward in whatever direction I go. Having finished my degrees prior to the placement, this impact has more been in the transition from university (and my studies unrelated to finance) to first learn the basics of the financial markets and then learning how to apply the skills I have learnt at university and in life to date, in a business environment.
The Company
The general atmosphere is very good. All staff are friendly and are happy to make time to talk with you, including informally. It makes for a space that you are happy to spend time in and where you feel valued. It sits nicely between social and professional and means that things are relaxed but also suitably focussed. It is an atmosphere I would be happy to work in long term, and appears healthy for the full time staff.
The internship is very well organised. A clear timetable hosted on a mobile app outlines all the key events and important information. The programme is well though through and well run. It feels well balanced between time on the desks and learning/development/other activities arranged by HR. There is also a good feedback mechanism in place via the mobile app which likely means this will be even better in future.
There is an extensive online training platform that you can make the most of as you so wish and there is also extensive compliance training, which is especially important today. The internship also has various talks and lectures run by employees from across the division that offer great insight and help you build the bigger picture of the business. In addition the learning and development you get on desk courtesy of colleagues makes you feel invested in right across the board
Company Parties/Events
The idea of the graduate programme with further rotations to hone in on a business area best suited to my skillset is very attractive should I receive an offer
The Culture
Yes, with both fellow interns and existing employees. However the early starts mean that these are concentrated at the back end of the week/finish by bed time. However the intern cohort were a good group and when we managed to squeeze in some social time it was a lot of fun, though as the internship went on people tended to get busier with work etc. My first desk had a good social scene, with team events and events with clients.
