The Role
Internship has been a very good opportunity to learn and discover the different roles within the bank. I really enjoyed working with bright people in such a multicultural environment. As it is a very large organization, do not hesitate to network as much as possible and meet as many people as you can.
I felt really valued by my different colleagues during the time I have spent at Citi. As a summer analyst, colleagues really value each and everyone's input by providing positive feedback on the work and projects assigned. Managers and team members were also quite supportive with regards to providing useful advice.
Management and supervisors definitely provide a lot of guidance with regards to the different projects on which summer interns are assigned. As a summer analyst, we really work closely within the team, and often interact with different business areas such as investment banking, capital markets, corporate banking or treasury and trade solutions. People generally take their time to listen to you and your questions.
Generally speaking, it depends on a day to day basis as some days were extremely busy whereas some were not as much. Workload was also heavily impacted, depending on whether there were live deals or transactions during the timeframe. But, to be fair, ad hoc requests were also part of the job and it is very important to manage people's expectations with regards to deadlines.
I was given quite a fair amount of responsibility during my placement. Even as a summer analyst, we do have a positive impact on the business, whether it is external (working on client presentations for example) or internal work (providing market updates etc...). The most important thing for me is that I really enjoyed having responsibility and took pride in my work.
The training at the beginning of the internship really did help because a lot of people in the summer analyst class did not study finance before. So having such opportunity to learn about finance is definitely a plus. Throughout the internship, as many tasks and projects are learnt literally on the job, the learning curve is quite steep and it is important to show motivation!
The Company
The office is general is quite busy, workload and schedules also vary from team to team as people in markets usually start earlier. Generally speaking, I think Citi's culture embrace hard work and rewards people who are motivated on the job. Even if people look busy, it is always possible to manage workload and take coffee breaks for networking purposes. The cafeteria downstairs also provides food and coffee/tea so it is very convenient.
The overall summer internship was very well organized as we had one week of training prior to starting on our desks. Depending on the business area, it is also possible to complete up to two rotations during the internship. The rotational programme allows interns to learn more about different teams and expand their horizons.
I think, in terms of personal training and development, the company has invested a lot for interns because there were many different events organized throughout the internship (conferences, speaker series, training week, etc). Also, all business representatives and human resources were supportive when we had questions or queries with regards to specifics.

I know that Citi offers an amazing graduate scheme for people who join full time as programmes can be rotational. Business representatives always mentioned that there is a place for everyone so definitely show motivation and hard work. I would be very interested to join the company full time now that I have experienced the culture for 10 weeks.
The Culture
Different events were organized by human resources throughout the summer in order to meet and network with different summer analysts as well as colleagues. The atmosphere within the intern class is generally quite good, as we did not really feel the competition between ourselves. We made sure to organize lunches, dinners etc together.
Living in London can be quite expensive, I would recommend choosing a location not too far from Canary Wharf to avoid losing time in the tube//bus. Socialising in London is very easy as there as many different places in which people can go (pubs, restaurants etc...). Canary Wharf offers a lot of different alternatives so it is nice to work within this area.
Good but as not good as in the City of London.
Citi puts a lot of efforts, trying to promote different activities outside work. For instance, during the training, summer analysts were shown different programmes that full time analysts and associates took part in the recent years. I think, there are many different ways to be involved and Citi offers a lot of solutions.
