The Role
I enjoyed the internship a lot. There is no doubt that some days are better than others and getting into the office early can be a struggle from time to time. However the work that I was given to do was very interesting and thought provoking, and was not the typical intern tasks like updating data that some might expect.
My colleagues valued me a lot, making me feel like part of the team. They trusted me to update them on certain things that they couldn't make in person and also to update models after results and so forth. You definitely start to feel like part of the organisation by the end of the internship.
I had a buddy (junior employee who can answer your really basic day-to-day questions) and a mentor (more senior employee). Both were extremely helpful and were available whenever I wanted to talk about anything. My buddy took me out to lunch a couple of times just to check I was doing ok. My manager was there whenever I wanted to ask questions and was extremely helpful.
I never felt overly busy, partly due to the nature of my project, but never felt bored either. There is always something else to do and so there will never be too little work. However the business is very conscious of not overloading interns with too heavy a workload and so none of the interns I know felt overly busy over extended periods of the summer.
I was given responsibility to update models, write notes and write summaries of presentations that the team couldn't attend in person. They certainly trusted me that when I wrote something it was correct and they used these ideas to form their own opinions of other areas of the business. Couldn't ask for more as an intern.
The first week of training was very useful in terms of skills like communication, assessing working styles and technical knowledge on financial markets. All of this will be extremely helpful for both life in general and also degree studies next year. My skills for writing and supporting this with evidence in the form of charts also improved over the summer.
The Company
I was an intern in Research so the floor is fairly quiet, but that just comes with the nature of the business. Everyone is extremely friendly and very welcoming. Teams joke with each other a fair amount and it does not feel dour or dull at all. Generally a great atmosphere.
Extremely well organised - Campus team are very slick in organisation of events and training. Internships are clearly part of the bank's DNA and so everyone knows what to do when you have questions and is there to help when things are going wrong. Lots of events and training organised both within lines of business and outside - couldn't ask for more.
We received a full week of training in the first week of the internship, which helped with personal development. Training was also provided afterwards for specific line of business issues, such as how to use Bloomberg. We were also given access to the company's learning portals and to a course on Bloomberg.

Very appealing - the company seems like a great place to work, in terms of career development (lots of responsibility early in a career), great people and interesting work done here. Having worked here for 10 weeks, you can't help but want to work here again full time in the future.
The Culture
I didn't get involved in this much since I had quite a lot of other stuff going on at the weekends and the hours are long enough in the week to make going home after work a more attractive prospect. But other interns did a fair amount of this and seemed to enjoy it.
Cost of living is very high, given that it is London, but the benefit of this is that while socialising can be expensive, you also have much more available to do and are never short of options for somewhere to go and visit. The internship pays enough to enjoy it too.
London nightlife - expensive but good.
Yes - we were offered opportunities to go on runs, play rugby, get involved in the company's networks and so forth - BAML were very good at providing these opportunities to us. We also did volunteering as an intern group in the first week, which was nice to get to know new people in a non-work environment.
