The Role
I became heavily involved from Day 1 - my team presented opportunities for every day to learn more about the area I was in. I had 2 main projects and assisted with a number of day to day tasks. We had a number of intern events which helped us to network and make long term connections.
I was very valued by my colleagues, each of them got me involved with things they were doing and were more than happy to spend extra time explaining things to me. My colleagues organised socials to welcome me into the team and this also made me feel very valued by the team.
I had regular update meetings with my manager as well as every day contact. She would regularly give me feedback on my work which was great. I was also given a lot of support from my buddy and mentor who would also organise weekly meetings with me and give me their advice and direction.
I was mostly busy on a day to day basis, and where there were any times where I had finished work early, or my colleagues were busy, I would set up meetings with people across my division and from the business in order to meet more people, find out about the business and network!
I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility. I was allowed to be independent in my projects and therefore planned my time accordingly. It also meant that the projects were mine to manage and did not need to seek approval for every decision I made in relation to that project. Of course feedback was welcomed.
The skills I developed assisted me in my degree as there was a lot of logic and careful review involved which is something I would do in my Law degree. It gave me tangible experience and also assisted me in learning about the workplace in comparison to my experience at university.
The Company
General atmosphere was extremely friendly, people were always willing to sit down and have a chat with me and they definitely took interns seriously. The atmosphere is very collaborative with different divisions always working together to achieve the teams goals. This was especially true in Compliance where the business continuously worked with us to make sure they were keeping in line with laws rules and regulations.
The overall internship was very well organised, interns were given real responsibility and everyone knew to give time to help interns. The internship had a number of formal and informal networking events in order to get to know the business and peers. This was highly enjoyable and it is clear that a lot of effort went into the program.
We had Executive Speaker Series which basically means would be able to hear very senior people give a very high overview of the area which they are in. It was one every week and we learnt a great deal about other business areas other than the one we were already in. We also had a week of training given by an external team where we had trading simulations.
Company Parties/Events
The future employment prospects are highly appealing. In particular I am highly interested in the graduate program which allows us to rotate within different areas. This broadens the opportunity to learn and the internship has already allowed us to meet many people in these areas already which is great when joining a business.
The Culture
Yes the social scene was good, a few of us would go for drinks every Friday and sometimes I would do drinks with other interns or my own team at work. We had dinners too which were highly enjoyable. We also had an intern event where we made pizza, this was a nice change where we could informally enjoy ourselves with other intern friends.
Cost of living was quite high in central London so instead I decided to live in the outskirts of London. Socialising was the standard prices in London and I was happy to pay that to have a good time with interns and the team. It was very much a work hard play hard attitude.
Nightlife was good! Although I did not go out that much as I like to go home in good time and prepare for the next day. Bars seemed good round the area and I do know that many people were enjoying drinks after work on a couple days per week.
YES. I took part in the J.P. Morgan Challenge which was extremely fun!! I took part with interns and members of my team and it was highly fulfilling to represent team BAML. I also took part in a compliance volunteering day where I build a playground at Stewarts Road Adventure Playground.
