The Role
The work I was given was technical and interesting. There was a huge amount of resources available to us, we had many discussions with executives and my line manager and team spent a lot of time with me. The atmosphere was great and everyone was very kind and collaborative. My office chair was comfortable.
As an intern there will always be an element of reliance, but my small contributions really felt valued. Their willingness to spend time with me definitely helped in making me feel comfortable and confident in what I was doing. They were very positive and complementary which was very motivating. I though I added value and I think they would agree.
My management and supervisors spent a huge amount of time with me. They gave good answers to all of my many questions. We had regular catch-ups to check on my progress and they gave me a lot of information about how the company works and what they do within the team. We went for many coffees.
It was a great balance for me, my days were not as long as I expected them to be, though I extended them in order to try and exceed what was expected from me. I never felt bored and without work at my desk, but equally I wasn't too stressed with the amount I had to get done.
My project involved quantitative research and I was mostly responsible for my areas of it, though I was working closely with my line manager. By nature of the project, nothing I did would have an immediate impact on the company, so it gave me a lot of scope to take more responsibility. The research was quite technical, so I required direction from my line manager - I was not running the show.
I learnt a lot of quantitative finance, mathematical methods and computational techniques. These will be helpful in my degree and in any future quantitative career I do. I also had an opportunity to develop my organisational, leadership, team-working, communication and multi-tasking skills which will aid me in whatever I do. I have learnt a lot.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very positive. The office was a very collaborative environment and the team worked hard and made sure each other felt valued. They often spent lunchtime together and spent time with each other after work. Everyone worked hard but it had the feeling that everyone was in it together.
The internship was very well organised. There was a huge amount of events organised for us, which would have been challenging given that there were 240 of us. When I got to my desk, all the programs that I would need for the internship had already been set up and an account had been organised with e-mail included ect.
The company invested a huge amount in us. They organised many discussions with senior executives throughout the firm and many networking events for both interns and employees (drinks, pizza making evenings, bowling...). My line manager and team in general invested a lot of their time in me and any one I reached out to within the company was happy to give me some of their time.

The future employment prospects within the organisation are very appealing. The atmosphere within the company is very good, the work I was given was interesting, the perks of working here are plentiful and I feel that I would develop and learn a lot within the company. I definitely hope to work within Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the future.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst colleagues and fellow interns. We often went for drinks after work on Friday evenings. We also played touch rugby, organised by one of the Directors, every Tuesday evening and had a tournament at the end of the internship. We also went for lunch in groups every day, it was very easy to remain sociable.
