The Role
I was placed in a very good team, with very helpful colleagues to get me settled. I enjoyed the work assigned to me.
I was always welcome to have lunch with my team lead, line manager, and buddy. They shared their work experiences and were interested in getting to know me.
My line manager held regular 1-on-1 sessions with me where I was able to ask questions about anything and get advice about work. This also gave me the opportunity to share any problems I had.
My days were well organised, with neither the morning nor the afternoon significantly busier than the other. There was always work to do, but this was (thankfully) never an excessive amount.
I had the opportunity to have some of my code put into production, which made me feel like my work was both valued and useful.
My organisational skills were very much used in this placement, and the development styles I was exposed to, such as Scrum, Agile and Kanban, will no doubt be invaluable when I return to university for my final year.
The Company
It was a comfortable atmosphere, where there was always enough peace and calm for you to focus on your work.
There were training sessions at the beginning, and many events throughout.
I had the chance to receive a whole selection of training, in addition to the compliance testing. I attended DevOps talks, received a Kanban Level 1 certificate, attended a Risk Academy session about digital fraud, and attended various financial training courses.
Company Parties/Events
I had the chance to speak to fresh grads and analysts who entered through the grad program. They all spoke highly of it and the grad program appeals to me.
The Culture
As a placement/off-cycle intern, I had the chance to interact in social settings with both recent grads, summer interns, and even with permanent staff. I enjoyed the opportunity.
Naturally, London is an expensive city, making both cost of living and socialising higher than other places. However, with moderation, this was not something that hindered socialising.
There are many bars and restaurants in Canary Wharf.
There was a citizenship challenge, and a hackathon organised for the interns.
