The Role
I really enjoyed the teams and found that I was doing a lot of work that excited me. There were also plenty of opportunities for socialising within the interns informally, or within the teams and on a more formal basis.
Very
Most of the employees were incredibly helpful especially the AVPs and analysts
To begin with not terribly busy however this escalated throughout and I became very busy
I ended up with a fair amount due to being on a busy live deal and having clients directly coming to me for work etc.
I think they will help me with presenting and attention to detail, though the job was not entirely relevant to my degree the soft skills I have learnt will help me achieve more
The Company
It was quite quiet where the teams would sit as people tended to concentrate quite a lot. However where the analysts and grads sat it was veyr buzzing and it had a good feel. People would concentrate when it was necessary however, later at night especially when working a lot. The atmosphere would become more relaxed and you got to know the team a lot better which was pleasant and helped you through at around 1/2 am as the natural energy supplies can only do so much!
I felt that the workplacement initially was a tad unorganised as there was not too much work for the interns to do, but you learn this is because people want to start you off on easier tasks before demanding more and building up more trust. The formal sessions were well organised hwoever, sometimes work would come in the way of HR sessions which could often cause a conflict of interest as to whether to stay and do work or attend the mandatory/ recommended sessions. More communiocation between the two rather than using the intern as a mediator I feel would improve this.
Individuals especially would invest a lot of personal time to teach you things, talk you through deals etc. The programme itself spent a lot giving you overviews on the areas within the bank and the different teams which was good for a general idea. The skills you learn in the three day training can only teach you so much, therefore I would say the true investment was people and their time. Which everyone was more than willing to giveup!

I thought that the future employment prospects were one of the best things about the firm. There appears to be a lot of flexibility moving around the firm and more than often people would go on rotation etc. I liked this as a plan as it meant you were not restricted once in the firm. Moreover, the cohort system was incredibly appealing as you are not pidgeon holed form internship into one sector per se but instead get to experience a variety of areas throughout the firm in doing so. The job progression as well is obvious and appealign throughout each level.
The Culture
Definitely. Every friday the iterns go out for drinks and then often to a club afterwards. Moreover throughout the week interns from different sectors of the investment bank meet up for lunches, drinks etc. Even with weekend activities. I would definitely say this was one of the best thing about Barclays is that the interns involved in the placement were all very sociable and all tended to want to go out, socialise and explore the life in london of an analyst. Social scene of inter grads and interns was also very good.
Expensive
Not that great - good bars but would taxi out
