The Role
I hugely enjoyed my time at FDM, during the 8 week internship I was assigned several tasks of my own - both individual and group task with the 9 other interns based in the UK. The biggest group project was to research and create a Virtual Reality video to be used to showcase FDM Group and their award winning graduate fair. During this we were able to research and purchase the equipment needed, film the video, edit and export it onto the VR headsets we had chosen - to end the project all the interns, from London, Leeds and Glasgow, were flown to London to present the project to the board of directors!
At FDM I was never made to feel like an intern, at any point. I always felt regarded and respected as a member of staff. The feeling in FDM is unlike any other corporate atmosphere I've ever seen, it has real personality and the people couldn't be more friendly and approachable. During my second week I was able to meet the board of directors before their monthly meeting, and in week 3 I had arranged a Video Conference with the UK Head of Marketing to talk through my ideas! I could never imagine this happening with any other company, FDM Group's atmosphere and culture is it's biggest selling point - I can't encourage you enough to at least attend an open night or assessment day.
I was informed who my direct line manager was in my welcome package, just before the internship started. On arriving for my first day I was then introduced to my mentor - separate from my line manager. FDM's atmosphere was open to the point you could easily approach anyone - regardless of their position
I was given a great balance of tasking given weekly and freedom to work forward on the longer term tasks I had been given. Beyond that there was just enough time to be able to proceed on separate projects that I was passionate about, or that I felt could make a difference in the company
The responsibility level was a great level, not too much to the point I felt overwhelmed, but enough that I felt self-sufficient and not required to check in with a manager every hour. Regarding the group VR project, we were given complete control of the decisions, provided we could justify them of course!
From better communication skills to how to conduct myself properly in a corporate environment, I feel I I've learnt loads from my time at FDM. Beyond that, even though I wasn't in a directly technical role, I have increased my tech skills and it has sparked a new interest in coding - somewhere I never thought I'd be!
The Company
The atmosphere was, and is, the best part of FDM. I can't recommend it enough but it feels more like a community than a corporation - everyone is so friendly and more than willing to listen to your ideas - or help you if you get stuck
There was plenty to do in my internship, moreso admittedly was pre-planned for the technical interns - but I still felt busy, doing valuable work at that. I never felt I was working just for the sake of working
As training is a huge part of FDM, I had plenty of access to the training material - and the mentorship I received from senior members of staff, to help me shape my ideas was invaluable
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
After reading some more negative info online I was hesitant before beginning my internship - but after my time at FDM I wouldn't think twice at a job offer - and didn't! I was told, based on my performance, the team would be more than happy to welcome me on full time after I had finished my degree.
The Culture
The team, both full time and interns, were all friendly and sociable.
N/A
The nightlife in Glasgow is second to none!
Yes, outside activities were arranged - football every Wednesday!
