The Role
As far as placements go, it was as exciting, interesting and engaging as possible. I was part of a team of interns from across Glasgow, Leeds and London who worked on creating (from scratch) a virtual reality project. Aside from this, I was able to work on creating a dashboard for the Glasgow/Leeds offices, which was a C# ASP.Net application. This wasn't something I had any previous experience with, so was really great getting a chance to learn about it - and with a lot of support from members of staff up and down the country.
Within the first day I didn't feel like an intern; instead I felt more like a full time member of staff. I was welcomed into the team, and built a good relationship with everyone from the Glasgow offices as well as other interns. I never at one point fault I wasn't valued by the company.
My line manager was massively supportive with anything I wanted to discuss. When I was working on any project, I was regularly catching up with my manager to ensure that they knew exactly where I was at, and where I might need support. That support was offered at any point during the day, and my manager was very approachable and easy to talk to.
Like all jobs, there were days that were busier than others, but overall I was hugely busy on a day-to-day basis. From meetings - which were not the clichéd mundane meeting that one would assume to be the case - to project work, I was kept on my toes in a very fast paced team dynamic. It was absolutely crucial to deploy some kind of time-management to avoid blushes of missing a deadline; I regularly had several projects ongoing.
Quite a lot of responsibility was given to me throughout the placement, culminating in a presentation in London on front of the full board of directors. This was a lot of pressure, and very nerve-shredding, however it taught me an awful lot about how to cope with such business situations by throwing me in the deep end - and this responsibility ultimately I feel has given me the best possible opportunity.
This has definitely given me skills that I can directly apply to assist me in my degree and further studies. Project Methods that I studied in uni, I have managed to see how they actually work in a practical environment. For example, agile and waterfall models etc as well as the software development cycle.
The Company
Excellent working dynamic, everyone was really friendly
I had a clear plan of what I was to be working on from pretty much day 1
Significantly invested in supporting us in a group project, and offering us a budget for projects we work in. There was no training as such, but my progress was monitored and reviewed.
Company Parties/Events
I enjoyed working within the FDM offices and would consider a technical role within the company, having seen how it operates.
The Culture
Yes - I was regularly playing football, or going for lunch/dinners with other staff
N/A Commuted From Home
Great selection of pub, clubs and restaurants
Several. There were trips to various places that I got involved in as well as football and meals out with clients.
