The Role
I certainly enjoyed my internship here at Citi. I feel like I learned a lot which is always an enjoyable feeling to have. I also feel like I made a lot of good friends who I will be in touch with for a long time. I have enjoyed spending time with them and learning from them in the context of an internship and Citi here in London.
I definitely felt valued by my colleagues. Even at the beginning of the internship when I did not know enough to add much value, people were always checking in on me and helping me learn. Later on, when I was able to take on serious work and definitely add value, my colleages were always very appreciative of my work.
My managers on my two rotations were both very helpful. They were helpful in settling in and in setting goals for the internship or the rotation. But most importantly, they were helpful in facilitating guidance between me and the rest of the team, where I ended up learning from a large number of people on the team.
It definitely depended on the day how busy I was. One day, I was so busy that I didn't have time to go out for lunch until 5pm because I just had so much to do during the day. However, this was not the norm . I was usually a good amount of busy, never with nothing to do, but only sometimes working under pressure for deadlines.
I was given a lot of responsibility in my placement! By the second day I was writing updates on the market that were going out to clients, and I was also working on materials that were to later be used in client meetings when pitching deals. As I developed further, I was given more and more responsibility because I was able to take on more with my skillset
It depends on the skill being discussed. My knowledge of finance will probably not help me much in my non-finance degree but it will definitely help me in a future career in finance. The soft skills that I developed such as teamwork and communication will be helpful both in my degree and in any future career going forward.
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was really good. It was a good balance of working hard and taking breaks to have decent chats about things to break up hours of straight work. Further, people were friendly and always willing to help you out with something that you may have been struggling with, and this is the best way to learn.
The internship was definitely well organised. There was effective use of an app called Guidebook which scheduled all of our activites and made it very clear when we needed to be places for events. Further, I cannot speak for the midterm event as I took that day off, but I heard it was very well organised given the size of the event and its location.
The company invested firstly an entire week of training which consisted of seminars and training sessions ranging from general business and professional skills to the more detailed particulars of what it means to be a banker and how to do the job that we need to do. But most importantly, sitting on the desk and being trained by colleagues was really helpful.
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely like to come back and work at Citi and can only hope that I am given the opportunity to do so. I have had an amazing experience here and I have met many people that I would like to work with. Further, I feel like I have only scratched the surface of what it is like to work at Citi and I have much more to learn and do.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst my fellow interns though it was hampered by our long working outs ruling out most weekdays for out of work events. Fridays were better but still difficult due to the fact that everyone got out at different times and thus went different places for socialisation meaning it could be hard to get a full group together.
The cost of living was as to be expected in London. Rent was under 1000GBP a month but coming in close to that number, and food was priced as it is elsewhere in the city. One note- the canteen at Citi was more expensive than expected. They were certainly pricing above marginal cost and making some sort of money.
Well canary wharf is not known for it's nightlife, but there are nice bars here. Also, if you care to make it out to the centre of London, the nightlife opportunities are endless. So overall, apart from the occasional long night bus trip home, I would say the nightlife experience was very satisfying during my internship.
There were opportunities provided by Citi but unfortunately I did not have the time to take many of these opportunities given the fact that I was working long hours, and I was only at the company for what seems like a very short time. If I come back full time, I would love to get more involved in activites outside of work.
