The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bank of America Merrill Lynch; it is evident that the culture here is very friendly and encouraging for all team members. There is a clear focus on diversity inclusion which I value very highly. The work was challenging, but rewarding and the people were friendly but driven. All in all I would absolutely recommend this internship.
I was given a good amount of responsibility. My manager made sure that the projects I worked on would have a visible effect on the business, whilst also making certain that I used the experience as a time to learn about the systems that the bank use. I was involved in all team meetings, and my views and opinions were always listened to with good intent by other team members.
I believe that the skills I have developed during my time at the bank will be invaluable in my final year at university and also in my career in the future. I gained experience in Agile development methodologies, working within an intelligent and goal-driven team, developing applications for large scale systems, networking, time-management and business acumen.
The Company
The office was definitely a fun environment, and everyone around me was extremely friendly. However, people at the firm recognise the importance of the work we are doing - and such when they have to work they will put 100% of their effort in to it, and when they have an opportunity to have fun, they will do so in an inclusive and responsible way.
The internship was very well organised. Each division had a dedicated team of HR representatives who worked tirelessly to ensure that we enjoyed our experience at the bank. If there was ever a problem that meant you could not complete one of the activities, the HR team would always be around to help out.
It was clear that the bank did not want to use interns as a means to an end, but wanted us to use the opportunity to develop our skills across a broad range of activities and come out more knowledgeable and ready to work in such an environment than before. We were given opportunities to attend multiple learning events and executive speaker series each week. These ranged from lectures on thematic investing and the technology of trading to talks from some of the most senior executives at the bank (including [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], CEO).

I have not yet had my final review meeting, in which I'll find out whether I will be offered a full-time position. However there have been plenty of opportunities on the internship to impress and show why you should be chosen for the job. You also have a mid internship review meeting, in which your manager discusses with you how you are doing and what you can do to improve - which is very helpful.
The Culture
My fellow classmates were all very friendly and we would often socialise outside of work. Even though socialising with your class involves lots of new people - which may be daunting for some. You are brought together by a common drive to succeed as well as having similar skill sets and interests. I will certainly retain the friendships that I have developed on this internship.
The cost of living in London is very high - rent, food and drink, travel and socialising do amount to a large amount. However, the salary provided will cover all of these costs. And if an intern has to relocate from abroad then the bank will help with that process. All in all - living and socialising in London during the internship is completely possible.
There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. These included things such as; intern touch rugby games (involving both genders), formal drinks events, private museum exhibition visits, team activities and socials and many more... The events organised by HR would usually host free drinks and food which was an added bonus.
