The Role
I really enjoyed the 10 week placement at Lloyds Banking Group. They really do invest in their internship scheme programme. I have felt very valued at my time here and really hope to be given the opportunity to return as a graduate. I have been given real work with real outcomes, and proper responsibility. I have worked in a really nice team of people who have all supported me along the way.
Everyone that I have worked with has welcomed me with open arms. I work around a team of about 10 people and each and every one of them always offer their time and support when required, even at busy times. Coming into the company as a 'temporary intern' is normally quite scare as you automatically think that no one will really take interest in you but I can honestly say I feel like a part of the team. Lloyds are really passionate about their interns as they believe they are the 'future talent' of Lloyds.
My direct line manager has supported my greatly since day one. He has provided me with weekly one to one sessions to discuss my development, weekly objectives and just for a general catch up on the week. He has also ensured that I made the most out of my 10 weeks my providing me with set objectives that I was required to achieve by the end of my internship which was a great tool to have.
When I first began my internship I feel like it was very fast paced and overwhelming (as it would be in any company due to the amount of information you need to remember) but over the next 9 weeks I found myself with always somethiung to do, an objective to meet, or a development plan to carry on with. I was never bored or short of work, and always asked for something at quiet times.
Overall, I was given responsibility on all of my tasks, where although I would have support from my peers, I would lead, follow through, implement and post review all of my work. Some of these objectives were process improvements that could overall improve the customer journey, which is a huge responsibility at Lloyds as they always put the customer first. I also had the responsibility of implementing 2 team improvement initiatives.
Currently studying an Accounting and Finance degree, I decided to apply for a business based role at Lloyds bank just so that I could get the expereince from a business respective rather that a finance side. This was to ensure I had the background knowledge to support my degree and with the development and experience I have had at Lloyds Bank I can say that It has really benefitted me and believe that I will now go back to my final year of study with the ability to do better in my grades.
The Company
This was the fist time I have worked within a banking environment and I can say that it was a lot different to what I expected. You can definteley sense a sort of culture around the business where each department can vary. The atmosphere within my team is very chilled out and relaxed, where we get to dress down on some occasions, take part in fun activities and also we are not micro managed, we are trusted to get along with our work without management staring down our screens. It is a very nice environment to work within.
The internship was very well structured. Day 1 was a internship day in a conference room in London where over 200 people attended. This was a very fun day where we had a talk on the business, from different stakeholders, took part in fun activities and also had the opportunity to network with other interns from different cities before returning to my job in Cardiff. Every week we had a webinar on development and also within my taem my manager was very invested in my development throughought my time. It was very well structured, a lot better than I ever expected it to be.
The company was very invested in our personal training and development. We had weekly webinars, weekly one to ones and a huge line of support from the emerging talent team. We were each assigned a buddy that was always there to support us, which I had the opportunity to speak to before, during and after my internship. There is also a range of support networks within the company that you can be a part of that help you to develop, learn more about the business and network with peers.

With Lloyds, every intern is given the opportunity to have an interview to go straight into the graduate scheme for when you finish your degree. I am really hoping to get into this scheme as I really have enjoyed my 10 weeks at Lloyds Banking Group. The graduate scheme is very appealing as it is structured very well based on developing us as future employees where we are rotated 3 times over 2 years so that we get a different flavour of the departments across the company.
The Culture
Yes, in Cardiff there was 9 interns that started and we were placed into (free) accomodation together. This was good as it gave us the opportunity to make friends with one another and for those of us who had to re-locate from far away, this was great sense of comfort knowing that we would always have someone there as a friend. We go out for meals occasionaly and also nights out. Some of the friends I have made I will definately keep in contact with after the internship ends.
We were given free accomodation through our 10 weeks in the business, which was just a 5 minute walk away from the office. the cost of living was not as high as london and was never an issue, especially with no rent to pay. This was very handy as it allowed me to be able to save up for my final year so that I could focus on my degree rather that get another job to help support myself. There was a lot of places to socialise in Cardiff with many places to visit. Also- Cinema was only £4!!!
Nightlife is great. Always somewhere to go everynight and always a place to suit everyone. We regulary went out on nights out on the weekend, it wasnt too expensive and sometimes very cheap.
Yes. As all the interns were placed together in accomodation there was always something to do. Cardiff is full of places and activities to get involved with. There was concerts, pride and many more things to get involved with. I was never bored.
