The Role
The placement gave an excellent understanding of the work environment and what kind of job a developer does in the company. The atmosphere was good, work was interesting and people around were great. We also had a lot of intern-specific events which gave a wider understanding of the industry and the business (some of them more useful than others for me). Overall definitely a great summer experience.
Everyone was easy to approach, friendly and great to work with. You also get chances to socialise with them outside work hours and get to know them better which was great. Other team members also equally respected me as a full team member, not just as an intern working at the company for 10 weeks.
All interns get assigned a 'Buddy' who assists you on a day to day basis and helps you settle in. Your manager is also easily contactable when needed. Between them you get all the needed support. You also have other members of your team and other teams ready to help you if ever needed and at no point did I feel lost/not knowing what to do
Everyone gets assigned a project by your manager and deadlines set varied by different managers. At no point did I not have work and felt bored. Working hours are pretty flexible too with flexible lunch and break times. Most people finished their initial projects and were assigned to second or even third projects at times.
Each intern is completely in charge of their project and also get chances to pitch in idea for projects other members of their team are working on. Before finishing your work, it gets reviewed by other team members who suggest valuable improvements and modifications to improve your work before submission.
Coming from a Computer Science background, all the knowledge I gained from the financial products and that side of the business will not be very applicable to my degree but I enjoyed learning about them regardless. As a developer, the internship provided an excellent opportunity to practise my existing skills rather than learn new ones
The Company
Overall atmosphere was great, people were friendly and was quite relaxing to work in. Not a lot of pressure or tight deadlines to meet.
Overall it was organised well, some events were advertised last minute and not given enough information prior to it. But apart from that, nothing too bad.
The company has great learning resources available for all staff for personal development and technical knowledge improvement. On top of that, they have learning sessions periodically with more senior staff members who hold talks on their speciality. For interns specifically, you get a lot of technical and personal training sessions that have greatly helped.

At the end of the internship, we are told whether we get an offer or not. If you're going to start your final year at university you get an offer to work at the company on a full time basis in a year's time. If you still have more than a year left, you get offered another internship place for the following summer. The process is pretty transparent and getting an offer depends on your individual performance
The Culture
Other interns and colleagues were involved in a lot of outside activities which we got invited too and could join along if we wanted too.
I live in London, so I commuted to and from work everyday which isn't too cheap (around £10 a day). A lot of options for restaurants in central London and most of them were reasonably priced. Apart from going out for food and drinks and outside company arranged events, not a lot of events happened at work.
Not the best person to ask.
There are a number of societies and clubs in the company that bring people of similar interests together and allow people to try new things. Particularly for interns, there were a lot of events arranged to socialise and get to know people from other parts of the business which was great.
