The Role
This internship has given me the opoortunity to discover my interests and learn a tremendous amount in the process. It has also given me a platform to contribute in a manner than produces tangible results for the organisation. I have learnt about the various aspects of banking and will certainly continue to build on these experiences.
Being part of a new team can be daunting but because of supportive colleagues I felt welcomed. I was valued just as much as other colleagues despite being at the Bank for only 10 weeks. The tasks that I was given were indicative of the respect that the team had for myself. Also, getting to understand people beyond contrubuted to me feeling valued.
Every colleague at LBG is approachable and willing to meet with interns. They take time out to run through their role, responsibilities and take you through yours. They will answer any questions you have and you can go to almost everyone in your team for guidance.
Given that it was a 10 week internship,a lot of my days were packed with day-to-day tasks, meetings, events etc. Other days were relatively free but those days give you an opportunity to do your independent research on any aspect of the organisation. How busy one is also depends on how proactive they are. If you like working and being pushed out of your comfort zone then be proactive in seeking tasks.
The intital period of the internship is usually slower than the latter part because you try and understand the basics of your team and your role during that time. As I progressed through the internship, I was given a lot of responsibilty in terms of analysing monthly financial performance across various clients, working on credit papers, using our key systems to ensure information was constantly updated, attend both internal and external calls and helping the team out with any other tasks,
I have developed both personal and professional skills during the course of this internship. Some of which are time management, the ability to work on various tasks in the same period and still producing all to the best quality, being perceptive of people's wokring styles etc. I strongly believe that these skills will enable me to contribute significantly to my group tasks, conferences etc.
The Company
There was an ideal balance between work and relaxation. Every employee understands their job and responsibilities and also takes of the time to build meaningful connections with other colleagues. There is an evident culture of support & guidance, and as a Summer Analyst I felt very welcomed.
The internship was very well organised - from the time I had sent in my application to when the 10 weeks came to an end. There was regular communication from the bank's end which gave me a sense of direction & clarity. The HR team were approachable and one could expect to receive a quick response. The internship itself required us to meet certain set objectives whilst also providing the flexibility to explore other areas of interest within the bank.
As a Summer Analyst, I received as much guidance and learning as I looked for. I always had the opportunity to get in contact with members from my team as well as other divisions and teams across the bank. The induction event & a group for all interns to interact with each other helped me to familiarise myself with fellow interns.
The bank offers the opportunity to get a place on the Graduate Schemer to both Summer Interns & new entrants. Should one prove their merit and their ability to contribute to the organisation, the bank will provide them with a platform to further their career. Albeit, as rules & regulations become more and more stringent for banks across the world, the banks are facing the choice to retain only the best.
The Culture
All the interns based in one location were offered a common accommodation which enabled interns to get to know each other better outside the work environment. There were various opportunities to interact with one another which helped everyone on the internship.
Being based in London, the cost of living (excluding accommodation) is more than most other places but the provision of LTA for all London based interns helped minimise the overall outflow. It also comes down to individual tastes & preferences and what one chooses to do on a day-to-day basis.
London offers myriad places to enjoy the Nightlife. The areas that I worked & lived in were both lively - a mix of restaurants offering different cuisines, clubs etc.
Along with working as part of a work team, we were also given the opportunity to raise funds for a charity. It was a great opportunity to liase with fellow interns & scholars for a cause as beautiful as this. We got to execute various ideas, most of which were extremely creative, in order to raise as much awareness and funds as we could.
