    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was very interesting and varied. I have touched many different areas of the business and core IT systems. The intern team has been very supportive and having regular meetings to make sure we are all progressing well. The events put on for the interns have been great and have meant I have learnt a lot about the bank generally rather than simply about my department.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team makes me feel very involved and valued. We regularly went for lunch and team focused events. Team members are always offering to give me tasks to do or to pair program with me. If there have been times when I am unable to complete work they always give me training to improve my skills.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was fantastic at every step of the internship. He was welcoming and created a structured learning plan, tailored to me. He was always open to answering questions and helping me if I needed it. He has given me constructive feedback at each step allowing me to make improvements in my work. He has given me one-to-one training sessions on many of the banks technologies so that I fully understand their purposes and operations.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Overall there were very few days where I was not busy. There were many different intern focused events combined with an intern team project and feature team activities. The balance was good as I was able to participate in a large variety of activities. These activities have allowed me to integrate well with both my team and the other interns.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The main responsibility that I had was to complete my Intern project. This project meant I was able to see a project all the way through the project life cycle, adding value to the business. Due to the complexity of the systems that my team is using, I spent much of my team programming in a pair.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • From this internship I was able to learn new skills such as new programming languages, which will prove to be very useful in the future. I have also been able to learn a lot about how the banking industry works and projects within my team work. This combined with applications of skilled I have been taught at university have proven invaluable.

The teams are all highly productive and very welcoming to new people. Everyone in the office is very approachable and happy to take any questions I may have.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was fantastically organized by all of the HR employees. Every event was well thought out and planned superbly by all those involved. There was a mixture of both inside work events and outside work events organized, providing a great balance. All the events were punctual, informative and relevant to all those present.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invests heavily in giving their interns the best training opportunities that it can. The bank has provided weekly training events; combine with an initial training period lasting 2 weeks. The weekly training sessions build on top of the skills which you learn during the week. There has also been one-to-one training and development with members of my team.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The summer interns had many events which were put on by BAML throughout the internship. The interns have organized many other social events through the internship every week which have been great! There were many other team events that have occurred outside of work which have also been good. Both the team and other interns were very sociable.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • During the internship I was living out of my how about an hour and 20 minute commute away which proved to be a difficult commute at times. This however meant that my costs of living were very low. The costs of socializing are every similar to being in any other location in London (higher than most other places in the UK), but this was still manageable.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As the internship was in London, the night life opportunities were great as there are many events available within a short distance. The travel options are good as there is the tube and Uber so you can get back quickly after a night out. This coupled with an already busy nightlife mean that London is a great place to be situated.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The bank has provided many different opportunities that employees and interns can do outside of work. As a bank employee you are able to access many of London’s attractions for free or at a discounted price. The bank also has lots of activities that it puts on such as dragon boating and touch rugby sessions. All interns are encouraged to get involved with this.
