About You
I really enjoyed the placement, it gave me an insight to how a team coordinate within a building consultancy and how the different service lines provided interrelate. I was able to go out on site visits and learnt about different aspects of building surveying contracts. Much of the areas I was told about I will not learn at University.
I felt very valued and everyone was very kind and answered my questions and accommodated my needs. However it was very busy at times and this could be challenging in terms of being involved on tasks and seeking help. There was a couple of social events, lunches and team activities which I was invited to and included in training schemes.
I was given support when needed although there was not always people in the office due to annual leave and busy periods of work. There was not always structure in what I was meant to be doing however I filled out my time proactively. When I needed help then people gave me detailed explanations. Everyone all the senior staff were very approachable.
I now have a broader understanding of the role of a building surveyor. Physically experiencing aspects of the role through site visits and learning skills such as writing surveys which I can apply to my final year. It has enabled me observe the environment of a team in an office and the dynamics of a client relationship.
The Company
The placement overall was well structured through HR. Interesting talks from different departments broke up the weeks and when people were able to help they were really informative. Due to the busy nature of the job, sometimes it was difficult to take ownership of task as was only at the placement for four weeks.
The general atmosphere was very positive and friendly. As everyone was welcoming and was aware of you gaining experience. HR were very helpful when they needed to be and it was nice to have other internships at the same time so you were not alone.
JLL had structured talks from lots of different teams along with my own. I was also included in lots of training schemes and sessions on sustainability.
The insight was useful to gage the environment. However four weeks is a short space of time to be given a lot of responsibility.
The company culture is quite clear as soon as you speak to people. Approachable and friendly with lots of support. Although the company is so big you do not have much involvement with other areas of the firm.
Although it was a short time and I did not given a huge work load. I enjoyed the aspects I experienced and has reinforced I have chosen the correct career pathway.
Everything Else
Apart from the other interns there is not a huge involvement with other aspects of the firm.
I had a team night out, a department night out and some lunches which were great opportunities. Although it would have been good if we could have integrated more.
There were lots of clubs and sports that could be signed up for.
I definitely would - mainly as it is beneficial through the fast track process on to the graduate scheme. All experience is good experience and it really is useful to have a taste of life as a building surveyor.
