The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. The placement is tailored to you and is constantly evolving to test you, to push you and to develop you as much as possible. The placement provided me an opportunity to experience a real world big corporate lifestyle, and to be emmersed in the business world.
Centrica promotes an extensive involvement environment, where everyone feels a part of the team, and i felt as i was in one of the team from the first day. Each member was excited to hear about you, about your work, about your life outside of the company. The work that you do is designed to add value, and the work is used by your team.
I appreciated the testing nature of the placement, and especially how I was allowed to try and fail and to use my initiative before having to ask for help. Guidance is given when asked for it. If you want to work and struggle until you crack/fail then you can, but uf you want more guidance then it can be provided.
Some days i was extremely busy, others i wasnt. It was a fluctuating occurance. But with the freedom that you can do as much or as little as you want per day, If you want to spread a task over 3 days you can, or you can smash it out in one day. I chose to get it done as soon as possible, so i was in charge of my busy-ness levels.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility, and from very early on. I was tasked to create a complaints model that will be introduced to the live model, with llittle guidance of the how, they wanted a novel unique piece of work. This was a fair amount of responsibility.
The skills i've learnt will definitely help in my future. From the feedback of my personality/behaviour test i needed to be more conscientious in the work i was doing. This was aparent in the work i was doing, as one wrong number or formula could lead to disastorous consequences. People management skills improved. Technical skills improved. Leadership skills improved.
The Company
general atmosphere was friendly, open and welcoming. All the employees are willing to aid and help and put a side time to be of assistance. Being based in a call centre it can get a little noisy, which is out of your control and can get a little frustrated when your deep in concentration. My team wasnt the most gregarious and the fun didnt eminate from our desk.
Organisation slacked quite a lot, to the point that it was dissapointing. Accepted the placement believing i would be working in Staines. 2 weeks before changed to leicester. Minimal contact and information about the change. Induction instructions for North based students very minimal. Felt left out/ not included, from the placement due to being in the minority of north students. First two weeks were a little hectic, with no real guidance or assistance. No thorough welcoming and introduction to the office or the staff, facilities or the job i was doing. Required a lot of work by myself.
There were several events that were organised includig the development day and the Presenting with impact day. The development day was fun, a good chance to socialise and network. The presenting with impact day was a great idea, and had massive potential to do great things for a lot of people and be of great benefit. however the presenter and the content were lacking and disapointing. To improve, i would keep the presenting with impact day, just change the presenter and content - more tailored to speeches than presenting.
National Travel
The Job prospects are appealing but didnt have the chance to experience what is out there. Lack of awareness reduced the appeal. If i knew what was out there, it would be more appealing.
The Culture
only 4 interns based in leicester, compared to the 40 that were in staines/windsor so the social aspect was smaller. I was the only intern at my office so didnt have anyone at work to socialise with. Accomodation was with the other interns, and luckily the people were nice and friendly.
Cost of living was acceptable.
Nightlife was good
Nothing.
