The Role
I enjoyed my placement very much. The work was varied and engaging. The work was also challenging with the appropriate level of assisstance given where it was required.
I worked in a small team and felt highly valued for my contributions to the on going projects being undertaken. The team were not only a pleasure to work with but were always good to chat with over lunch or a coffee break.
I was given work that would challenge me and was left to go away and take a stab at it and come up with my own ideas. However, help was readily available when requested but only as a guiding hand to help you work out the answer for yourself.
Only being a summer intern I was not as busy as my year long internship with Rolls-Royce. However, the level of work was adequate to keep me engaged through the internship without needing to juggle too many tasks at once.
Due to the technical specialty of the department I was working in I think I was given the appropriate level of responsibility in my work. I was left to go and complete the task using the resources available to me and then required to defend my work when technically scruitinised. This ensured that I explored all avenues when approaching problems.
Communication and networking skills are always easy to build upon working in an office environment but my skills in problem solving and report writing/referencing have made the time spent on this internship of great value.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was lively with significant activity in the break areas during lunch time. People are generally accessible and always ready to lend a hand with problems.
As a returner to Rolls-Royce I had gone through their simple returning process and had received my employment contract before the first semester of university had started. All my security extensions and payroll information were easily extended so the process didn't distract me from my studies.
The company has sought to take me back for this second internship and are keen to retain undergraduates that meet the required performance criteria. Additional courses to support your role going forward are available from the internal Learning Development Centre. Some training is classroom based but some is computer based that you can perform from your laptop in the office.

I am currently undergoing my second internship at Rolls-Royce and have already filled out the necessary returner forms to apply for the Graduate Programme.
The Culture
There is an Interns and Graduates Social club. This organises regular events and activities for club members at a reduced cost but some events are open to the rest of the company as well.
Cost of living and socialising in Derby is fairly priced in comparison to other surrounding towns and cities.
There are numerous pubs and bars in the centre of Derby which are fair prices and offer a range of drinks. There are also a number of clubs for those who enjoy clubbing.
There are a number of clubs you can get involved in at Rolls-Royce as well as the fitness centre on the Sinfin site in Derby. There are also opportunites to become part of STEM programmes and volunteering networks.
