    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the placement very much - I was never bored and always had something to do. Coming into the internship I was cautiously optimistic about the friendly and team-orientated work environment descriptions by people who working in M&G now or have worked there before, but my expectations were exceeded as teams felt incredibly flat in terms of hierarchy and I really had plenty of opportunities to have my voice be heard in a meaningful way.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have been assigned meaningful work from day one and even when presenting my work to various colleagues I never felt like I was being evaluated or that my work was as inconsequential - the work I did was treated with respect and genuine interest, I definitely feel like I added something of actual value to my team during my stay. Overall, the work relationships I made are great, but I wish it was easier to develop them as sometimes I wasn't sure whether I was seen as too pushy or not keen enough.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support and guidance that I was given by my manager was plentiful, although I had to be very pro-active about it and make sure that my manager knows what I'm doing and what I am struggling with so he could give me meaningful advice.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had plenty to do every day, I don't think there was ever a day where I didn't know what to do, but even though the work load was substantial, I never felt overwhelmed or stranded as I could always talk to my manager so we were both on the same page in terms of expected deadlines and the nature of the completed projects.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think it was a good balance of being responsible for meaningful and useful projects, which were not necessarily essential to the team's operation, so even though I felt like I was making a contribution and that the results of my work were influencing significant decisions within the team, I was never under stress because of work that was overly important.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Over the couple months in M&G I've learned more about investing and the finance industry than I have over all the years I spent trying to learn about it on my own, it really was a transformative experience as just working within a very experienced team or meeting and chatting with various industry experts really opened my eyes on a lot of previously unseen parts of the industry and gave me insight on work that is simply unseen by the vast majority of people. Now I definitely feel confident enough to pursue a career in finance even if I come from non-finance related degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Even though the general atmosphere was quite casual, everyone was still very focused on their work, but there were plenty opportunities to have a small break, get some tea and have short chat. I really enjoyed the fact that the 9-5 work day is embraced fully at M&G and I was never pressured to stay late in the office.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organized very well - the structure was very clear right from the start, the events were always well organized and there were plenty of opportunities to give feedback which was taken very seriously. I always had people to contact if I encountered any problems or had any questions.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invested an incredible amount of effort to all of the interns as we had almost weekly meetings with fund managers and other experts from various departments of M&G, all the IT resources that were available to other employees were available to me as well, even if they were quite expensive, I never felt like the company was cutting costs or restricting me from doing something just because it was too costly, I felt very well accommodated.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - it would be very difficult to find a company with a more appealing work culture and graduate scheme.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, because of the constant lectures from various people from the company we always had a chance to regroup and make plans either for having lunch or going out after work, the social events that the company organized were also amazing for getting to know your peers outside of work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It's London.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Aside from the social events organised for the interns, we also had chances to participate in the company wide sports events.

    4/5
