The Role
The Flat structure of M&G allows for you to gain a good understanding of working for a top Asset Manager. This internship is a great opportunity to get both a large amount of interaction with and exposure to the different Funds franchises, and to work closely with very talented and genuinely nice individuals.
Individuals were thankful when I carried work out for them and they genuinely seemed to appreciate my help. Tasks I carried out were incorporated into presentations used by Fund Managers to clients and to update internal information used daily by Analysts. I came away feeling I helped contribute to the team. Everyone in the office is supportive; all I asked to have a coffee with happily agreed.
My manager was free to talk to whenever I had a question; she was extremely approachable. We also had weekly catch-ups scheduled in the diary. In addition I had 2 meetings with HR (Half way through and in the last week) to discuss my progress and to determine areas to work on.
Always work to be done, however the quantity varies over time. Reasonable level of autonomy; volume of work depends on what you make of it.
Good level of responsibility; I was entrusted to carry out my tasks without being checked. Encouraged to organise meetings with individuals throughout the business to complete tasks.
Gained a greater understanding of the Investment Industry, specifically the Leveraged Loans market. Analysis and research skills I have picked up will help me at university.
The Company
Supportive culture. You have to move first in order to know people, but once approached everyone is friendly. Pleasant environment to work in; you do not feel 'looked down on' as an intern.
Well organised. Clear structure to the internship. From day 1 you know your timetable for the next 8 weeks with regards to training meetings and socials.
Had 16 training insight sessions over the 8 weeks, each on a different area of the business. This included insights into Equities, Fixed Income, Multi-Asset, Infracapital and Alternative Credit, to name just a few.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing.
The Culture
Got on well with the other interns, enjoyed both socials organised by M&G (including Ping Pong night and Pub Quiz) and externally by the interns ourselves. Drinks at the Oyster Shed after work on a Friday is a given!
As expected; expensive, however you are working/socialising in central London.
A lot of bars/restaurants/clubs that are busy until late, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings. However the 'City' is pretty dead at weekends in terms of nightlife.
Depends on your team. Other interns have taken part in golf, tennis, squash, football, baseball events with their teams outside of work time.
