    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The Flat structure of M&G allows for you to gain a good understanding of working for a top Asset Manager. This internship is a great opportunity to get both a large amount of interaction with and exposure to the different Funds franchises, and to work closely with very talented and genuinely nice individuals.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Individuals were thankful when I carried work out for them and they genuinely seemed to appreciate my help. Tasks I carried out were incorporated into presentations used by Fund Managers to clients and to update internal information used daily by Analysts. I came away feeling I helped contribute to the team. Everyone in the office is supportive; all I asked to have a coffee with happily agreed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was free to talk to whenever I had a question; she was extremely approachable. We also had weekly catch-ups scheduled in the diary. In addition I had 2 meetings with HR (Half way through and in the last week) to discuss my progress and to determine areas to work on.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Always work to be done, however the quantity varies over time. Reasonable level of autonomy; volume of work depends on what you make of it.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Good level of responsibility; I was entrusted to carry out my tasks without being checked. Encouraged to organise meetings with individuals throughout the business to complete tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Gained a greater understanding of the Investment Industry, specifically the Leveraged Loans market. Analysis and research skills I have picked up will help me at university.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Supportive culture. You have to move first in order to know people, but once approached everyone is friendly. Pleasant environment to work in; you do not feel 'looked down on' as an intern.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Well organised. Clear structure to the internship. From day 1 you know your timetable for the next 8 weeks with regards to training meetings and socials.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Had 16 training insight sessions over the 8 weeks, each on a different area of the business. This included insights into Equities, Fixed Income, Multi-Asset, Infracapital and Alternative Credit, to name just a few.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Got on well with the other interns, enjoyed both socials organised by M&G (including Ping Pong night and Pub Quiz) and externally by the interns ourselves. Drinks at the Oyster Shed after work on a Friday is a given!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As expected; expensive, however you are working/socialising in central London.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • A lot of bars/restaurants/clubs that are busy until late, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings. However the 'City' is pretty dead at weekends in terms of nightlife.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Depends on your team. Other interns have taken part in golf, tennis, squash, football, baseball events with their teams outside of work time.
