The Role
I found the internship very enjoyable, being a tech based internship it was nice to see that the project I was working on actually fit into the business structure. The number of interns at my location introduced a feeling of camaraderie and it allowed easier discussion about different parts of the business
I was working on a project which would be automating some of the manual tasks my colleagues spend a lot of time on, when they could be doing something more useful, they have been very supportive and enthusiastic of me and my work as they know that it will make their lives easier and reduce the time they have to spend on repetitive tasks in the future
This Internship provides all the support you would want, you get the support from your direct manager for anything business/management related, your team for anything project related, a recruitment team for any HR queries, a graduate buddy for anything internship/graduate scheme related and a technical mentor from another part of the company for any technical queries you have.
Generally there was a good work balance during my internship, there were times where the tasks were mounting up where I could just tell my manager to hold back with the new tasks and times where I was looking for things to do where I asked for more tasks. At the beginning of the internship there was obviously going to be less tasks allocated to myself while they judged my abilities but by the end they could trust me with more work.
This aspect of the internship took my completely by surprise, I was expecting to walk into the firm and be treated like I had never touched a computer in my life... The reality was the complete opposite, I had been brought into the team as it had been identified that I was proficient in the correct technologies for the project, within the first two weeks I had brought a simple POC to a functioning prototype.
Generally most of the skills I was using while working I had gained before this internship and most of the new skills gained were very domain specific but there were a few skills with build automation, working in a large company and working internationally/across timezones which i feel will be very usefull experience for my years ahead
The Company
There are a lot of people in our office, it is always busy and sometimes gets a bit noisy but there are always spaces to chill and have a chat with someone. The desk layout did make it difficult to talk to some of the team but sometimes that was advantageous
We started with some online onboarding training which broadened our understanding of the company as a whole, we then received 3 days of offsite training run by an external company rotating around presentation skills, excel skills and more detailed information about how our company makes money. Finally when we started properly we were given access to the companies firm wide training portal which includes subscriptions to external training sites such as Pluralsight
Financial Bonus
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
There is a potential to be fast tracked into their graduate program at the end of the internship
The Culture
Yes, The graduate/intern recruitment team put on multiple socials for those in the internship in interesting venues around the city. The interns themselves also organized their own socials to go to the theatre, participate in the Colour Run, visit other nearby cities etc. Generally a large group of us would head to the pub after a good weeks work
For such a large city, the cost of living is cheap and as the office is based near 3 large universities the cost of socializing is low
The office is based near 3 large universities the nightlife is very student oriented
