The Role
The location was the only downside for me- wish I hadnt been placed so far away. It would have been alot nicer to be placed near my hometown of Bath or uni town of Bristol as I felt very homesick in the intial few weeks and it is very expensive to travel home when you are so far so the first few weeks were quite hard. It also would have been nicer as I could have interacted more with my family and friends rather than being isolated from them over the 10 weeks. So I hope they do not place me so far up again as it can be quite lonely especially when it is a new place and new environment on top of the new job you are about to start.
My team only consisted of two others who were both absolutely lovely- as it was a small team it meant i could have more responsability and that my line manager and her manager could get to know me alot better. they both were very friendly and I have learnt a great deal of knowledge from both of them as they are both experts in their field. Their work ethic is also wonderdul and they have both been really lovely to work with.
Somedays very busy other days were less busy but always had something to do . Additionally sometimes I was given longer project type tasks which I could always go back to if I was feeling low on responsablities. This meant I could be much more independent and proactive in my role rather than expect someone to give me a task constantly.
Quite alot- I was very lucky to be able to gain alot of insight into the central finance area of the bank and saw that there is a lot more to finance than just numbers. I also got great exposure to alot of industry experts who were still happy to talk me through their roles and daily tasks which was really helpful to gain a better understanding of the company too.
I think this has improved my applicable knowledge pf economics vastly and to be able to see accounting practices in work shows they are not as daunting as they seem. Additionally the regulatory reporting team that I had my placement in helped me gain a great insight into the role of external authorities and the steps banks take to make sure they can adhere to their rules and guidance.
The Company
Very very friendly- everyone is always enthusiastic and it was a much warmer atmosphere than I expected of the finance department of a top bank. There are service excellence huddles everyone attends within their teams, daily. These are really helpful as it is a quick catchup with the team on workload, general mood and extra such as any celebrity sightings or whther there are any fun events happening around the office. I think these help to bring the team together more and are a easy way to keep on top of not only yourself but your team also.
I thought it was quite well organised however sometimes, especially at the start of the internship, I felt like I didnt have much to do but this I guess was natural as I was just settling into the role so my workload was limited until I understood the background of my role and the scope of it. Each intern is assigned a line manager who also highlights them a general work plan for the period of the internship. As everyone is in different roles, everyones internship is slightly different which is great as you feel unique and that your contribution is individual andn not overshadowed by other interns in your office.
I think there is a massive investement in interns like me from LLoyds- we all get our own desktop- some even get an additional laptop. Some even get to travel around and attend meetings on other offices in other cities with the team. I have felt very priveledged to be at the internship and have been treated extermely well. Additonally since i have been in one so far away from home accomodation has also beeen provided which is an added luxury. In terms of invesrtment in me, I think this is very impressive as it motovates me to do better for the bank as i have been taken care of well and it creates a good atmosphere and sense of belonging right from the offset.
They are quite appealing as long as there is plenty of scope to keep learning and refining yourself and gaining better understanding of different roles. The bank is also extremely reputable and it would be quite a good place to work as there is a good opportunity to travel as well. The starting salary is also quite decent and the bank has great bases and headquarter offices in major UK cities. This means within the company you will gain a good exposure to the industry too as it is well established institution within its field.
The Culture
Yes, there was always something going on- you can never get bored; both Lloyds and colleagues individually helped contribute to the very lively social calender. Additonally being placed here during the fringe only added to this and meant i got to experience a world renowned festival whilstb here too. although my work collegues are older, there are still common interest we can share whcihc means that work socials are very fun and the students here are all up for having a good time.the working day gives us the flexability to do this as it ends at five so means there is plenty of time for a social life too.
It was quite expensive but to be expected of Edinburgh I think. Perhaps may have been betetr to have subsidised canteen in my office or additonal work socials. But, the prices were not too different from Bath where I am from so it was too dramatic a step up. Overall I though it was fine as interns in London also get an addittion bonus to cover the greater cost of living in the expensive capital. Travel expenses can also be claimed by Lloyds which is useful and so if the help is needed it culd also be aksed for.
Its very lively and there is a large variety of things going on. There are dramas, comedies, plays, jazz nights, great restuarants, festivals, pop ups, free samples. there is quite an endless array so it is very hard to get bored whilst based here in edinburgh. It is good to make friends early for these things otherwise you wont get to enjoy all these things- unless you are happy in your own company inwhich case that is perfect.
There are multiple opportunities since there are many Lloyds offices based in a small area so everyone gets each others invites quite easily. There is always a pub quiz or cake sale happening and they are always well organised too. Since the cultural scene in Edniburgh is quite good too, outisde of work there are many venues nearby if you fancy a show after work such as Usher hall and everyone in the office is always happy to recommend anything good they might have also seen.
