    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Excellent work placement, allowed me to utilise various skills throught the year.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • One of national grids values is "work as one team, one national grid" , this was definitely felt throughout the programme. Each individual no matter how high in the company made clear that they appreciated the work i did and showed me the same respect as others who have been working there for years.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support is always available when you need it. My supervisor was always willing to help regardless of how small the issue may be, however at times when they are unavailable, there are many employees who would provide you with the guidance you need. This is made easier for you due to the way national grid integrates its placement students within the company, allowing you to network very easily.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • From the very beginning you are allowed to widen your knowledge base by learning more about the company and how it operates, this allows you to start planning your workload immediately. The projects i was assigned kept me busy enough to keep occupied but also allowed me enough time to experience every bit of the company and network where possible.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was happily surprised at the level of responsibility given to me during the placement. Not only was i able to add value within my team, my work was also noticed by others in the company and implemented across the UK business. I was not only entrusted with making decisions for the team which could prove costly but encouraged to do so.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Skills such as analysis/planning/communication will allow me to improve my ability to cope with the final year of my degree and these skills were developed heavily on my placement year. All those and other skills such as team work and problem solving will also enable me to increase my chances in obtaining a job and will allow me improve and showcase my abilities in any new role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I worked in depot, therefore there was always a face coming in and out. There is a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of real work. Each area has its own way of working and you learn to appreciate this. Everyone you encounter is very friendly and approachable, making your stay more enjoyable.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From the interview stage to the final few weeks of the placement, everything was structured well which allowed me to manage my time very efficiently. It also allowed me to obtain every piece of information and knowledge about the business, the energy sector and anything that excited me whenever I needed it.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Development is very much so the centre of the placement scheme at national grid. At the beginning of the scheme you are enrolled into training sessions which will allow you to understand your own abilities and to get a clear a picture of what you want, this is then implemented into a development plan that you will use throughout the year. If there are events or training you wish to attend the company will review your case and will most likely support you the whole way.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company offers great future prospects through its graduate programmes and other jobs. The placement really allows you to understand the business and which area would suit you if you wish to return in the future. As with most companies they are very keen to retain those who perform well and give you every opportunity to do so.
