The Role
The internship was very enjoyable. The company arranges many events to help you settle in and to give you an opportunity to network with a variety of staff. As an intern you also get meaningful work to do and you feel like you are contributed to the company. There are also many opportunities to get involved in things outside your day to day job, whether it be sporting events, volunteering for charities or getting involved in business resource groups.
Your colleagues at JP Morgan make you feel very valued. All of the staff are very willing to set up time with you to answer your questions, even if you just want an overview of a different line of business. You never feel like your opinion doesn't count just because you are an intern, you feel like a valued member of staff like everybody else.
The support from management is very good. At the start of the ten weeks you set some objectives which you work towards achieving over your time spent working at the company. Further to this, you have weekly one to one meetings with your management which is time to discus any issues and problems you have and to ask for more guidance if you require it.
This is really up down to the intern. You will be set a number of projects at the start of the internship which will keep you busy for most of the time. There are some times when there will be less work to do but in times like these it is important to ask to get involved in more projects or to shadow people working in other divisions to fill your own time. If you are proactive you will find that you are constantly busy and the working days fly by.
This varies according to departments. Due to only being there for a short time period it is difficult for interns to take on a huge amount of responsibility by themselves, but it is possible to get involved in projects with other members of staff where you can be given a lot of responsibility. The more responsibility you actively seek out, the more you will be given.
The skills developed over the 10 weeks will definitely contribute to my degree studies in the coming year. Soft skills like organization, communication, confidence, computer skills on excel, PowerPoint and word can be transferable to many situations in life and this internship caused them to develop greatly. The internship has also contributed greatly to my motivation to achieve/hit targets and this is something which will most definitely be useful in the final year of university study.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was generally really pleasant. Due to the high performance seating, where most people change their desk regularly everybody seemed to know each other well and there was constantly a friendly chatter going on. Also often people brought in food delicious food treats which contributed greatly to everybody's happiness!
The organization was good. There were many events organized for the interns and these all ran very smoothly, even with a such a high number of interns (100) attending each event. The assessment and feedback system was also very well organized. This was run by setting objectives, having a mid-internship review to give feedback, and having an end review to provide feedback again at the end of the internship
We had to complete various online training in the first few days at the office, however this is mandatory for all new employees. The firm gives you various opportunities to network and provides talks on other areas of business. There is also lots of effort put into educating the interns about the graduate job opportunities available after the internship.

The future employment prospects are very appealing. If you perform well in the internship then it is very likely you will be offered a graduate scheme to return to after completing your degree. It is also possible to do lots of networking around the firm to try and gain an understanding of where you would like your future career to lead to and what type of position in the company you would like to return to on the graduate scheme.
The Culture
Yes, most interns live together in student halls in Bournemouth town centre and have regular socials and go out together most weekends. There are also social events arranged for the interns by the firm at the beginning, middle and end of the internship in which drinks and food are provided so this is a great opportunity to mingle with fellow interns and make friends.
The cost of living in Bournemouth is fairly average for the south and slightly cheaper than London prices. You can rent a room in the student halls for around £130 a week and there are a range of places to eat and drink which vary massively in price.
The nightlife in Bournemouth is very good, there are a number of good clubs in the town centre which interns went to regularly on the weekends. There is also many good bars and pubs around the town which are fairly reasonably priced and good for visiting if clubbing is not really your scene. Furthermore there are other things to get up to like bowling, cinema, quasar and paintballing if that takes your fancy.
There are many opportunities to get involved in outside of the daily work. Over the summer there is a 'summer of sport series' in which netball, rugby, rounders, volleyball and tennis tournements are held and lots of staff get involved in. Also there are lots of opportunities for volunteering and all interns take part in a corporate responsibility day at a local nature site.
