The Role
Placement was always exciting, dealing with aspects of a vehicle that will directly affect customer reaction. Colleagues were very accommodating and treated me like one of the team. Additionally, I got to experience a wide range of company functions.
I was included in nearly all meetings and was allocated a full 40-hours worth of tasks at the beginning of the week, which were often project-critical. I was trusted as any other colleague.
I worked closely with my supervisor throughout my placement, and had the opportunity to ask questions whenever required. Meetings were held to review my progress, and experiences that I asked for were always facilitated.
I always had either tasks to get on with, or people who would have a task waiting for me!
I was entrusted with getting cars through the workshop, conveying information to build, representing the department in meetings, whilst never feeling like I'd been dropped in the deep end.
The communication and people skills, as well as general business timescale awareness that I gained during the 12 weeks were invaluable, arguably more so for an engineering job than my actual engineering degree.
The Company
Good balance of fun/humour and work.
The people in the department were excellent and accommodating. However, the undergraduate placement scheme team had next-to-no contact during the placement and I was often poorly informed of undergrad events and what I should be doing to document the placement. I feel I was lucky I had such a good department, but there was not such a clear structure to the placement in terms of the wider scheme.
Colleagues were happy to help and give their time to me, including getting me through driver training quickly enough to use on the placement.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Pending approval from my manager and finance, I will be offered a job after the placement.
The Culture
In Coventry & Leamington yes, less so elsewhere.
