The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement. The work I undertook was very varied and interesting, and rarely did I have nothing to do. The people in my team were fantastic to work with. The social scene at JLR is great thanks to a large number of student and graduate employees.
My colleagues were very supportive of me when starting out and learning the ropes. Over the course of my placement I've felt the work I have done be valued highly by my colleagues. I have created a good bond with my colleagues and will definitely stay in touch with them after my year has ended.
I was given a good amount of guidance from my line manager, but was not always told exactly what to do. This encouraged me to seek out work to do. I worked for a significant proportion of my time with various other team members who acted as my supervisor. They were all extremely supportive and grateful of the help I gave them.
Overall I was usually quite busy. There were a few times towards the beginning of my placement when I didn't have much to do, but once I got into the role and learned new skills I always had something to fill my time. There were very few times when I felt I was too busy and unable to complete a given task.
I was given a great amount of responsibility in my placement year. I spent some time getting to grips with the team and the role I was to undertake, allowing me to be fully prepared for the responsibilities I would take on. A few months into my placement I was given ownership of a feature in Infotainment, and became the lead engineer for that feature.
The experience of a year in work has undoubtedly helped me immensely. I now feel much more prepared for entering the world of work post university. The routine and work ethic I have developed over the year will also help me to make the most of my final year back at university.
The Company
The organisation of the placement is very good. Communication from the company is fantastic and everything is sorted well in advance to give you as much time as possible to sort out accomodation and other factors. Jaguar Land Rover is very experienced with bringing in students and as such has a good organisational support structure for any problems you may encounter.
There are many oppurtunities for training in the company. There are a multitude of training courses available in various areas. Some are more in depth masters level modules that can count towards an MSc from participating universities. Other courses are shorter but still extremely valuable. I took part in about 8 training courses during my time.

The Jaguar Land Rover graduate scheme is one of the most appealing in my opinion. The pay is very good, social scene is fantastic and the opportunities presented are second to none. Graduates undertake placements around the business to gain a wide range of experience, and there is loads of available training.
The Culture
As I've mentioned a couple of times, the social scene at Jaguar Land Rover is really good. There are a large number of graduates taken on each year and there are loads of social events put on by the company. There are a lot of opportunities to socialise at JLR.
The cost of living is relatively average for the UK. It is certainly much cheaper than the cost of living in Surrey where I go to univerysity. There are a wide range of things to do in the area and something to cater to any price range. Overall it is quite affordable in my opinion.
There are loads of oppurtinities to do things outside of work. The company puts on events for employees, and this goes even more so for Graduates and placement students. There is also a small fund available to every employee to learn a skill paid for by the company. Examples of this are advanced driving lessons, learning to coach a sport etc.
