The Role
I generally enjoyed my internship at Barclays, it is a very active and rewarding time in which I learned a lot. It is a bit of a jump at the deep end at the start and it might take some time to get used to the working environment, but the teams are very supportive.
I have been feeling valued by my colleagues throughout the time of the internship. Everyone is welcoming and respectful of one another.
All inters have a line managers who is responsible for their professional development and their general internship experience. Additionally each intern has a buddy, usually a recent graduate, who they can trust. I have made a very positive experience and really like both my line manager and my buddy. As such, I feel like I received a lot of individual support.
The internship is generally busy and there tend to be several tasks and objectives to fulfill every day. It might seem like a lot at the start, but also teaches interns how to organise themselves.
The responsibility you are given as a market intern is limited as you are not allowed to talk to clients. Yet, you support the team when creating presentations for example, where you are responsible for a fair amount of work.
The main skills I have developed are linked to efficiency, attention to detail and dicipline. Having also gained a good insight into the financial world, I feel like the internship is definitely useful in my degree studies and beyond.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is positive, lively and can be intense when important business deals are undertaken. People come from diverse backgrounds which adds to an enjoyable working environment.
The internship is generally very well structured; from the start many events are planned and there are clear steps to follow during the course of the internship.
The internship started off with a 3-day training course to get to know different areas around the bank. During the internship we continued to receive training sessions and met people across all areas to learn from their experiences.

Future employment prospects within the organisation are generally appealing. While it differs on an individual basis, most people seem like they to work in their teams after finishing university.
The Culture
The social scene was good, although there is room for improvement to get together interns through sporting/ other social activities.
The cost of living and socialising in London is generally speaking high, and especially the area nearby is not the cheapest.
The nightlife in the near-by area is okay, but it is not comparable to student nightlife.
There are opportunities to get involved in charity, sports and social events, although there could arguably be more on offer.
