The Role
Overall I really enjoyed the internship. I found the work that I was given had a lot of variety and was generally very interesting. The office was a friendly and comfortable environment to work in and my colleagues were very helpful and welcoming. I enjoyed the level of responsibility I was given and received regular, constructive feedback from my supervisor.
From the very start of my internship I felt like I was a valuable member of the team. My colleagues were happy to help with any queries I had (although I'm sure some of them may have seemed very simple to them!) and gave me a lot of guidance on the tasks that I was given. I was consulted on some decisions and thought that my opinions and suggestions were taken into consideration.
My supervisor is very supportive and give me thorough guidance at the start and during all of the tasks that I was given. A lot of the technical and general skills were new to me but this taken into consideration and I was given sufficient training in anything that I did not know. I was not given that much feedback throughout the tasks however once I had finished the tasks I was given thorough feedback.
As I was working on a variety of different projects I found that my workload varied as this is the busyness of these projects varied. This meant that at times I did find myself struggling to find work to do and I would've liked more to do at these times.
During my placement I was given a good amount of responsibility so that I felt that my actions and comments for having impact on the project, which motivated me, but I did not feel overwhelmed with the amount of responsibility as somebody with not much knowledge in some areas the projects were involved with.
I learnt an invaluable amount from my internship, from technical skills and language to general workplace etiquette and professional interactions. Some of the technical knowledge will help me in my degree studies and the experience as a whole will definitely help me in future when applying for other internships and jobs.
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was friendly yet professional. As far as I could tell everybody seemed to get on and respect each other. There were a lot of socials arranged which made it very easy for new members of the team like myself to bond and make friendships with other colleagues, which ultimately made the more approachable when I had a query.
The company was very organised in arranging my internship however I did feel that more extensive introductions would've made me feel more welcome at the start of my placement. At times I was struggling to find work to do too, however I feel that this is a reflection of the general office work as some projects were getting busier and closer to deadlines.
I was given online training during my first week and my colleagues taught me a lot about different software and standard procedures that I was not previously aware of. There was not much opportunity presented for development but I was only on a short internship so I think this is probably not applicable.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Although I really enjoyed my placement, I am not sure if this is the area that I would want to work in as a career later in my life, however I gained valuable experience from this and I believe that this will better my future employment prospects outside of the organisation.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst fellow internship students however I felt that there was a slight age divide with some of the older colleagues outside the workplace. Generally though everyone was friendly and there were regular office social events planned.
I already lived within walking distance of the office which meant that there was no increase in cost of living. Socialising in the area is not too expensive if you know the right places to go! I do you think that I had an advantage of living so close to the office though.
Having been a student in the nearby area for a year I can safely say that the night life in Bristol is very good.
There were not many opportunities for me specifically as I was only working in the office for a short amount of time however there did seem to be a lot of charity and social events going on outside of the office which there were regular emails and updates about so I feel like if I had been there for a bit longer and want to get involved in these activities it would've been very easy to do so.
