The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my Hiscox internship; all the employees I engaged with were friendly and helpful. The work was, after settling in, challenging and interesting.
My colleagues seemed to value my efforts so I never felt any of the tasks I completed were a waste of time.
My supervisors, especially early on, would take their time ensuring I had the knowledge required to complete the tasks set and invited me to bring up any problems I had with them or other members of staff.
Once I was set longer tasks I seldom felt short of work, however early on I did feel under utilised.
On the longer research/analysis projects I was given quite a lot of leeway on which assumptions/methods to use as long as I could justify them satisfactorily. However, understandably, the final decisions all were made by my supervisors.
Improved my presentation skills and structure of work for clarity to others. Excel and SQL experience will serve me well in a wide range of possible employments.
The Company
Professional, focussed but friendly and the occasional non-work related conversation was certainly not discouraged.
I feel I slotted into the team I was working with and became productive very quickly. The intern project worked well allowing all interns to contribute, drawing from their various different skill sets and departments.
I received a lot of informal training my supervisors which got me to grips with everything I needed to be able to be a useful member of my team. There was also an excel training day and several presenting workshops which were useful with a for general focus.
Subsidised Canteen
Hiscox is a company I would very much like to work for. However there is no graduate scheme place this year in the department I interned in.
The Culture
The social scene with the other interns was very good with a intern organised social about once a week. Having only one intern per department and a collective intern project greatly lessened any feeling of competitiveness between interns leading to a more friendly and relaxed environment.
The City of London is not a cheap place for anything.
Plenty of bustling bars and pubs nearby.
A few training days along with a visit to Lloyd's and the advertising agency which Hiscox uses were organised by the company for the interns. Apart from this, working in London provided many out of work opportunities.
