The Role
I enjoyed my internship thanks to the interesting work, friendliness of my team and opportunities to experience (through shadowing and otherwise) different areas of the finance division and the wider bank. I enjoyed staying in London and socialising with other scholars and interns through charity events and through meet us arranged within the accomodation.
I have received positive feedback and appreciation for many pieces of work that I have completed for the team and our stakeholders. My team have made an effort to include me in team events and meetings, and I truly feel like part of the team. I have been told that the work I do is helpful a number of times.
I had regular 1 to 1s with my line manager where I was given feedback and guidance, and also encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification when necessary. My line manager and other colleagues found me many shadowing opportunites and introduced me to a lot of people which expanded my network.
I did about 5 hours on average of total work per day (excluding meetings), and could always speak to one of my colleagues to get more work or shadow them. I was not often bored, and there always seemed to be something to do. There was not always enough time to have a full lunch hour, so clearly I was kept occupied.
I was given important pieces of work which were part of presentations and meetings with senior level colleagues, and trusted to ensure my numbers and analysis were correct. The level of responsibility I was trusted with has increased as my team and I have become more confident in my capabilities.
I have gained skills of data handling, analysis and corporate awareness during my internship. My competence with using Excel for accounting and finance purposes has increased infinitely (from 0), which is very useful as I currently plan to pursue a career in the financial services industry. I increased my professional social and networking skills through attending team and business area wide events.
The Company
Professional but friendly. There are often drinks, charity events and speeches which bring the floor together. Everyone is very approachable despite being busy. The office is open plan with very few individual offices (which are for executives only) which gives a real atmosphere of equality and community. There is plenty of space and it is not cramped.
My internship was well arranged in advance with transport and accomodation sorted for me. When I arrived my computer, accounts, network drives and access were all prepared and I had a permanent access/identity card within 2 weeks. There was a delay in accessing the internal instant messaging software and a phone number/account.
I went to open days and shadowing events/days, and was pleasantly surprised by the willingness of other colleagues to take time out of their days to upskill me. I had full access to the training and development software offered to colleagues through the intranet, and was invited to a number of training events and workshops. The mandatory training was also useful.

The finance graduate program is very appealing and I hope to be successful in achieving a referral.
The Culture
As mentioned earlier, there are social and charity fundraising events within the bank and intern communities.
London = expensive. Intern events were arranged around happy hour so the prices were approximately normal for those events.
I didn't experience it much, but other interns said it was good.
Endless, especially thanks to the charity challenge
