The Role
I have enjoyed the internship. It was a little boring to begin with just completing mandatory training but after the first couple of weeks I got given my own project to do as well as getting involved with different tasks my team are involved with. I also got the chance to visit other departments and get a better insight into the different areas of the business.
Everyone in my team were very welcoming and appreciated my opinions on different matters. I would be given feedback on different tasks I completed which was helpful.
I had weekly 1 to 1 catch ups with my line manager. This gave me an opportunity to ask any questions I had and seek help on tasks I had or the opportunity to ask about getting the chance to get involved in something else that I was interested in.
The first couple of weeks I wasn't really busy but after getting the training out the way in the first couple of weeks and being given an assigned project I have always had something to do but never been too busy where I have felt stressed.
I was given some responsibility but the tasks I completed in my opinion weren't the most important. It however was a good experience and I feel only being in an internship for 10 weeks wouldn't allow me to learn everything I needed to in order to gain a lot more responsibility.
I study Economics so banking is slightly related to my course, this will give me real life examples to use in essays etc. I have used different systems which will be helpful if I return to the grad scheme. I think some of the systems may be used by other companies so this system knowledge I have gained will be useful for my career going forward. I have led team meetings which will give me confidence when making presentations at university/work going forward.
The Company
It was a relaxed atmosphere. I had no problems with anyone. My colleagues were all sitting nearby including my line manager so if I had any queries then help was close by. My internship started with dress down fridays but this soon turned into everyday as a summer initiative to raise money for charity which was good. My team also regularly organised drinks after work and team lunches which gave me the opportunity to get to know them a little better.
My line manager was off when I first started so initially I wasn't too sure what I was actually there to do but once I met her and we set my objectives it was much more structured and I knew what I had to do. The company also organise you into groups with other interns and you have a challenge to raise money for charity. This gave my days a bit of variety at times and also gave me a good opportunity to meet and network with some of the other interns.
The company seem to be really focused on developing employees and expanding their skills/knowledge. All the systems I used I either got given training or I would shadow different team members. I had the opportunity to go to meetings/presentations on different subjects related to my internship which expanded my knowledge. I got to go to other departments on shadow days which is useful and if you have a particular interest in another business area my line manager tried her best to set this up.

The company interviewed me to the end of my internship for their graduate scheme starting next year. It wasn't too formal an interview as it was with my line manager who I know well so felt more relaxed. I now just need to wait on the result from that but the company do seem quite keen for interns to come back as graduates.
The Culture
I got put into accomodation paid for by the company with other interns which was good. I went on various nights out with other interns and there was always someone around to hang out with. We went to various nightclubs and to the pub quite regularly when the Euros were on.
Edinburgh as with any capital city is slightly more expensive than other parts of the country but with the internship we got paid a good wage plus free accomodation so you always have money to go out. Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on in August which is really good to go to, it does mean though that bars put there prices up especially in the tourist areas.
Edinburgh was a great city to live in. There are lots of good bars, restaurants and nightclubs to go to. The festival on in August also means you have hundreds of shows to choose between everynight if you are looking for something to do.
Yes, always fellow interns organising nights out. An email was sent round about 5 a side football after work so I got involved with that. Lots of different emails sent around from social committees for the grads and my department about different events happening after work/on weekends. There was always something going on so I didn't get bored at all.
