The Role
I had a fantastic experience at J.P. Morgan Asset Management: the training week, the work I was given and the atmosphere within the office all exceeded my expectations. The 10 weeks past incredibly fast as I was kept busy from day 1 with a meaningful project through which I was able to learn but also provide insights to my team.
I felt comfortable at my desk in no time as everyone was extremely welcoming. During the 10 weeks, all my colleagues made me feel like I was a part of the team, listening to what I had worked on during weekly meetings, asking for my input when relevant and inviting me to social events.
My manager suggested that I set up weekly feedback sessions, which were key to understand where I was standing regarding the project I was working on. He didn't hesitate to take more time if I needed it, and he would make himself free if I had any enquiries throughout the internship. This was the case for all my colleagues who always offered times to meet for any questions I would have.
The project I was given allowed me to fully manage my own time, which was ideal. I was always busy, without feely stressed out about missing deadlines as I had 10 weeks to plan how I would organise my work. Still, I felt the pressure to be productive, meaning that I was never bored. Whenever I felt like I needed a break from the project, I could work on some other tasks I was given on the side.
I was given full responsibility for the main project I worked on, and I had the opportunity to present it to my team and an overarching one. I was very grateful to be assigned to such a meaningful project through which I developed key skills while providing useful input to the team. In addition, being able to take ownership for my work was extremely gratifying.
I developed research and analytical skills that will be very useful for my degree. As for beyond, I was truly pushed out of my comfort zone, thanks to which I learned to work under a form of pressure that I hadn't experienced before. I also developed public speaking skills, which I believe will be crucial throughout my career.
The Company
Across the office, everyone was available to meet for coffee and tell me about their work.
The internship was extremely well organised: from day one we had a calendar with reviews and social events.
