The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship at Bank of America Merrill Lynch this summer. I have had the opportunity to shadow a range of people within different lines of business allowing me to expand my network. I have been exposed to both the business side and working in a technical environment and have been thoroughly challenged throughout.
I felt I was valued throughout my internship as I was put in a great team who really welcomed me into the bank. I got on well with the people in my team who also ensured to include me in both internal and external team events. I was also given work that would have an impact to certain people associated with my team.
My manager would do weekly catch up sessions to see how my work was going and in case I had any concerns. Everyone in my team was willing to set aside time to show me what they were working on and help me with my work. This was also the case for people based around me who would help with any general questions I had.
My day-to-day tasks involved balancing my project work and training with networking/shadowing different people within my team, within my division and within different lines of business. As well as this we also had several learning sessions to improve our knowledge on different key aspects of the business and to introduce the interns to a range of teams in the bank we wouldn't of had a chance to meet with otherwise.
I was given a good level of responsibility; my project was going to help certain people within my team as it was based on a requirement given by a key member in my team. I was involved in the weekly team meetings and the agile board of monitoring our progress.
I have definitely been able to improve on key skills that will help me in the future - I have improved on my time management skills and ability to meet a deadline. I have also improved on my communication skills through shadowing and networking opportunities and the ability to accomplish my goals that I set out to achieve at the beginning of this internship
The Company
I had the opportunity to sit on both the technology floor and the trading floor. The technology floor allowed me to network with like minded people who were very friendly. The trading floor had a much louder environment making it quite exciting.
The internship was well organised. A few things that could be improved are the on-boarding process which took far too long and some of the specific division training to allow us to get the most out of the time available.
It was very clear the company was completely invested in the internship programme by holding a whole week training, inviting employees at different levels to speak to us. Every week we had speaker series and learning sessions including web ex calls with the CEO and COO along with the Head of Technology and Operations.

Future employment prospects are very appealing - I really liked the culture of the bank and the team I have been based in. The location is great and the facilities are more than I expected.
The Culture
Definitely - there was around 240 interns in this class year meaning we had several people to make friends with. I took part in the intern Touch Rugby sessions where I met people from other divisions weekly.
Being in London everyone is aware that the cost of living is high.
Good selection of local bars/restaurants in the area and only a short tube right away.
Yes - I took part in the intern Touch Rugby as well as cross divisional activities throughout the internship. I also took part in a corporate run with a wide range of other companies.
