The Role
Good quality placement, with enough to do. Plenty of challenge, but plenty of places to turn when stuck. Pleasant working environment.
Right from day one, I was taken around the place, and was part of 'the group' at lunch. There were plenty of laughs.
Although busy, my manager always found time within a day to help me out with a problem.
At times, all I had to do was wait for a test to occur or complete. It was somewhat boring during these times, but that's part of the job.
The programs I wrote sent emails to external customers. I was given full responsibility over how the emails were sent and that the external customers were not sent too many messages.
Besides the knowledge of the language that I picked up (which will no doubt be useful in itself), I learnt plenty about work environments, how tasks are assigned and how projects are managed. I also learnt a lot about Unix, which I am really begining to love. I think my time here will vastly help with my studies.
The Company
Very positive. Every now and again, some guys from another department or group would come over and have a chat. Initially about work, but often it turned into something more jovial. This helped to keep the atmosphere light. Weekly, someone in the office would bring in a treat - chocolate, cake, biscuits, doughnuts, etc. And again, there would be a 10 or 15 minute break to wind down, and discuss any grievances or problems.
There was a lot of uncertainty as to how long it would take me to complete the project I was assigned. The specification was unsure and underwent many major changes, where the program development must be drastically changed because of an oversight in specification. That may have partly been due to communication with the foreign customer.
Not much, directly. But I can't see how they would need to.

I have been asked many times if I were coming back. The only reason it has gone no further is another company's own interest in me, by contract.
The Culture
Probably, I didn't get involved. There were many gatherings and lunches out together.
Higher than I'm used to, but then, this is the outskirts of London, so it's bound to be...
I wouldn't know. I don't partake in such things.
I got involved in a local badminton club through work and another employee who plays there.
