The Role
I believe this was a great experience which equipped me with the necessary skills to potentially become a full time employee at the company. The first week of training was very useful to get up to date with excel shortcuts and basic accounting and valuation, which proved very useful across the internship.
I felt my colleagues were extremely welcoming and helpful. We formed a very close group among all interns in the team, and met outside work as well. In terms of the full time workers, they helped whenever help was required and were very open and nice to all of us, which made a big difference in terms of how much I enjoyed the internship.
The support and guidance was excellent throughout the internship. On a personal basis, my line manager was extremely helpful with everything. She ensured I always had everything I needed and I was enjoying my job. She checked regularly that I wasn’t working too long hours and ensured I had enough time to rest.
Given the cyclicality of the job, the amount of worked varied greatly across the internship. Sometimes I was extremely busy while some others I was free. This was counterbalanced with long term tasks that I could do whenever I had no urgent worked. I believe in general the work load was appropriate.
I was given great responsibility as I was working directly with associate vice presidents several times during my internship, performing the tasks that are normally performed by a full time analyst. Furthermore, I had the chance to be part of a live project from the beginning until the end, which was a great experience that also involved a lot of responsibility.
Some of the skills learnt on the job are perfectly transferable to any aspect of life, certainly degree studies and beyond. This internship helped develop significantly my time management skills, which are essential in most aspects of life. Moreover, I also learned how to work in a team and pay great attention to detail, which will definitely help me in most aspects of life in the future.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very good. People were extremely welcoming and always helped when any of us had any questions. This made the experience much better as it creates the best place to learn and motivates us to ask more questions, which is great in an internship.
Overall, the internship was greatly organized. We always received help when we needed it and we could ask questions all the time. Everyone in the campus recruitment team was very helpful as well, and they organized multiple events to give us the opportunity to meet different people in the bank, across all levels of seniority.
The meet the MD initiative is the best example of how much the company invested in our personal training and development. Having the opportunity to meet managing directors from different teams was a unique experience which was very helpful. This provided us with the opportunity to get career advice from some of the best professionals in the industry.
Future employment prospects within this organization are very appealing. I believe the corporate culture of the company, together with its excellence in investment banking makes the prospects of joining as a full time worker a very appealing one. Given the experience from this internship I believe it would be a great place to work in .
The Culture
There was 6 interns in my team, and the atmosphere between all of us was great. We always had lunch and dinner together (except for when someone was very busy or had to meet a tight deadline). This made the experience even better as it ensured that the atmosphere in the team among interns was great and there were no rivalries.
The cost was relatively high but there were also affordable places. Depending on what one is looking for everyone can choose one place or another, but there are definitely enough options around to choose and accommodate the price that everyone wanted to pay. Moreover, there is a lot of supply of both places to eat and socialize.`
Nightlife was also great because there were a lot of bars where people doing similar jobs across banks used to go and socialize, which made the atmosphere there very welcoming. There was a great variety of bars and restaurants very close to the office which made the nightlife very good and allowed us to go there even if we finished work late.
We had plenty of opportunities to get involved in a wide range of activities outside work, including networking events and intern gatherings. Those were essential to maintain the good spirit there was among interns throughout the bank, which lasted for the whole internship. Moreover, the bank offered us to join a volunteering service.
