The Role
Really enjoyed my internship - the work was very diverse and interesting.
My colleagues made me feel very welcome from day 1 and always took the time to give me tasks and answer any questions I had.
Regular review meetings and very approachable should I have any questions. I felt particularly supported and further I found my manager to be very open to letting me try new things and I have been given a lot of opportunities to see different parts of the day to day work at Mercer.
Due to the fact that interns have projects to work on outside the normal day to day work I always had plenty work to do. Nearer the end of the internship I have been extremely busy with client work.
I feel I have been given a lot of responsibility. With the peer review system in place it is possible for an intern to work on projects of high importance which is very exciting.
The knowledge I have taken from this internship is more than I could have hoped for. With my previous knowledge surrounding retirement being limited I know this new knowledge will be incredibly useful for finishing my degree in Actuarial Science. The industry knowledge I have gained will help me beyond further studies and into graduate roles. Further, this internship has also developed my excel skills and communication skills.
The Company
The office has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
It took a long time to get access to the files I required in order to carry out my role to my best capacity. Other than this the placement was set up well. Buddy system in place was particularly helpful and really appreciated.
Received a lot of general Mercer training and then most role-specific training was on the job. I found my colleagues to be the most helpful with personal training and development as everyone more than happy to take the time to explain new things to me.
Mercer clearly values all members of staff. Particularly the staff members I have worked with make the company a very desirable one to work for. Personally I would love to come back to the company after university.
The Culture
As the only intern in Scotland this area was very limited. However, I had a great social scene with some colleagues and there were a few organised team night outs which were enjoyable.
Average.
Nightlife is good.
Not particularly, other than a few organised social activities.
