    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The Internship was highly enjoyable. The work was interesting and relevant, the social events are great to meet and get to know everyone else within the business, and the other interns you will be able to socialise with. Being able to get involved with the team and 'feel like one of them' is something you will really enjoy.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone is very willing to spend time with you, with the work you are given being highly relevant. No one ever said no to letting be spend time with them, irrespective of their seniority. You wont find many banks where the managing directors and more than happy to let you spend an hour with them.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Huge support structure of buddies, mentors, managers and those on the desk. Constant reviews and catch up with HR mean you are supported for the entirety of your time. The advice they offer covers Internship performance, help with the tasks you are given and general career advice.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • You are very busy during the day, but if you are applying to this sort of thing you will expect and probably enjoy this. It will fluctuate from day to day, and desk to desk, but you will be as busy as you let yourself be. The whole point is to get as much out of the experience, and in order to do so will involve working hard!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Initially you are given work to learn everything you need to know, and then even as an intern responsibility follows quickly. You will need to get the hang of the basics and prove you can be trusted to not make silly mistakes, but this wont be a problem. The work you are given depends on what you want to do.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Having come from a non-finance background, I went from knowing very little, to feeling very confident about starting a job in the industry. The training you receive is excellent, and the significant exposure you get on the desks requires you to learn quickly, and this what you learn is invaluable.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The people you work with are fantastic, and were a lot more relaxed and funny that I thought they would be. Networking is very important, and you can quite quickly end up going out for drinks with your colleagues should you do this effectively. We were here for Brexit, BoE rate cuts, and a few other things along the way and so at times things can get busy. It is entirely understandable.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Weekly breakfast meetings to give you colour on the overall business, a trading game to allow an understanding of how the markets work, weekly presentation tasks to encourage a deeper look into the relevant topic and the chance to develop presentation and team work skills. These are just a few of the things organised for you.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • You are given access to a vast amount of online resources before the Internship which acts as an excellent foundation. When you join, further training is provided and a intense session at Bloomberg is compulsory. The normal compliance talks and lectures then follow which are uniform across any bank.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • These are difficult times for the industry and so headcount has been an issue, and not something we know a lot about. It seems the majority of the hiring will take place fomr the Internship, and you stand yourself in very good stead if you perform well.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, drinks after work were common and act as a surprisingly good opportunity to network. We often went out on the weekends together too. You will be working with similar people to yourself and will therefore likely get on very well with them.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Its London, and therefore will be very expensive. You are more than remunerated in order to live somewhere nice and enjoy yourself, but forget the prices you've enjoyed at Uni. I managed to get a room with a friend so have less of an idea about the living costs.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is an incredible place to spend your summer. The nightlife is incredible and there are so many things to do in the evenings and weekends. You will likely have many friends there too, as London is the epicentre for those going on Internships during the summer

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes- you have mid internship social events which are good fun, other interns will do things on the weekends, youre colleagues will invite you out with them, there are community events in the city for you to volunteer on a particular project.
