    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Loved it. I learned much about everything. Not only about the work on the floor but also about the dynamics there, about the financial industry about peoples mind-set. The programme was very structured and we had many events with all the different desks to tell us what they were doing. Also we went to play Laser Tag and helped painting a community centre, had excel courses, weekly presentations...

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • This depended on the desks I rotated at but in general I felt appreciated and welcome across the floor and I felt that my work was useful to the desks.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had an awesome mentor, he introduced me to many people on the floor and put a lot of effort in helping me to find the position I would be happy with.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This depended on the desk. However on all desks I felt like there was always something to do as I got smaller and bigger projects. But at the same time I was always free to walk around and shadow other people/ desks. Besides the desk work we had a trading game going, many events and some presentations to prepare so I think no one ever felt not busy...

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was also allowed to work directly with some databases of live and historical trades and prepared a lot of stuff that was given to our clients and attended some client meetings.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The head of one of the desks I rotated at made me give a 1 minute speech every day about a random topic to improve my presentation skills after walking me through "how to improve your presentation skills". I feel so much more structured and confident now to speak in front of people. We also had awesome excel training, soft skill training, network training all of which was really useful. And most of all I got a good idea about how a trading floor operated and what all the different desks are actually doing. I will go back to university for a year and after this internship I changed my opinion about which courses to take during my final year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Way better than one would expect. At least better than I had expected. Everyone was very helpful and welcoming. No one ever sent you away or gave you the feeling that you were a burden. The opposite was the case, people took a lot of time to show me everything they were doing.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • All very organized.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • More than anybody ever invested in me. At least in such a short time.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I did not yet receive the decision yet but I felt that there are some growing and some shrinking businesses within the firm. I still have a good year to go at uni.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes I would say so. However during the last 2 weeks it became a bit intense and hostile for some days. I think it is normal given the circumstances but it would have been good to be reminded to put things in perspective as opposed to apply more pressure.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I paid 900 GBP a month rent. London is expensive but we were paid well enough.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The bar next to work was too crowded but it was a nice spot and good opportunity to get to know people from across the floor. Also for partying there is much around if you find the time/energy as Nomura is located next to London Bridge.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Depended on your dedication and time management but I would say there is not much time.

    3/5
