The Role
In terms of enjoyment, the internship has been a fantastic experience and one I’ve really enjoyed. There’s the chance to get involved with actual work and so many opportunities to network and find out more about different lines of business. The HR team are amazing and organise fantastic events for the interns.
I was a little unsure of what to expect on the first day, but when I met my team everybody stood up and introduced themselves and said hello. My colleagues have been fantastic and great to work with – they’ve been willing to spend time helping develop my skills and understanding.
My manager has been supportive and happy to spend time reviewing my performance and setting new objectives. I would advise to upcoming interns though to be proactive and ask for help/guidance when needed rather than expecting your manager to do everything for you – they have a lot of work and other people to manage too!
There are many opportunities to get involved with additional events and work shadowing outside of your daily work activities. So you’re very much in control of how busy you are on a day-to-day basis – the busier you make things for yourself, the more you’ll get out of the experience. But it’s great because you have some degree of control of the workload and hence starting/finishing times. It’s actively encouraged to go out and shadow other departments, and it’s emphasised that you need to look after yourself and not work too many hours, indeed colleagues actively encouraged me to go home and enjoy my free time on some occasions.
Responsibility definitely increases depending on your contributions. As I impressed and produced good quality work, I was given additional responsibilities. In terms of managing your time and workload, that is very much your responsibility. You can leave the office for breaks/lunch/events as you please (within reason), and effectively managing your responsibilities to ensure the team delivers pieces of work on time is important.
A summer internship experience helps with providing real-world working experience. Softer skills, such as team working, career management etc. are not generally taught at university and I think experience competing team-based projects within industry are hugely valuable. I will return to my studies with more confidence and a hard-working attitude, with the ability to more effectively deliver as part of a team.
The Company
Friendly and helpful. It’s very easy to get up and go and speak to somebody that will be able to help on a work project, and everybody is happy to help – just be polite and aware that you may need to ask for a convenient time that suits them. There is a TV that has been playing the Olympics in the office so that’s made for a great atmosphere too.
Outstanding, the efforts of the recruitment team were amazing. Everything was very well organised, and I was updated frequently with upcoming events, recruitment to the graduate programme etc. The HR team were always very approachable and happy to set aside time to speak with you about anything, including concerns or problems. Pre-internship communication was excellent too.
Hugely, there were numerous training sessions that I was invited you. I essentially had access to all training and development that a full time analyst would have access to. J.P. Morgan has a huge range of online learning modules that are made available to all interns, and so I thought the training and development opportunities were outstanding.

Very appealing. There are a range of lines of business to consider applying to but the one you join for the internship is certainly worth considering very carefully, as any offer you may or may not receive will be in the same line of business as the summer internship. J.P. Morgan is a highly respected company and they hope to be able to recruit you onto the graduate programme if you have performed well! One thing to note is that if you decide to go for another line of business at the end of the internship, you have to give up any chance of receiving an offer in your current line of business.
The Culture
There were a large number of interns on our programme and so the social opportunities were exceptional. As well as the events organised by the company, there were a very large number of events that the interns would organise and it meant for a great social scene amongst interns. I have made a number of very good friends as a result of the internship.
Good value in Bournemouth, and J.P. Morgan compensates you well so the cost of living is not a problem.
Very good, there are a large number of pubs, bars and clubs in Bournemouth. All within walking distance to the beach too which is great!
Yes, a huge amount.
