The Role
The work was varied and challenging at times but kept me engaged throughout. There was a focus on allowing the interns to see the all the departments within the Investment Bank to give you a more holistic understanding of how it as a whole operates. The team I was placed in was very social creating a pleasant office atmosphere.
There were times where I felt my work was definitely appreciated and valued by my colleagues. I was able to complete work in order to free up the time of the people I was working with so they could add value in another area of our project whilst I compelted the original task.
Whenever I had a question there was someone willing to answer it. My midterm review provided the guidance for the second half of my internship in respect to the work I had already completed as I then knew what I should carry on doing or what I need to do more of.
Some days where extremely busy but other days were more relaxed. There were background projects that we could get on with when we had no other work, so there was always something to do. Often the work would need to be completed on a same day basis, so some days can feel alot more intense than others.
There were tasks that you completed yourself that had to be done relatively quickly but another permanent member of staff would always be checking your work, removing the sole responsibility for projects. You were able to ask for more responsibility on a project if you needed more challenging work to do.
Will 100% assist me in a career that is similar to my internship but will not help me at all with my degree, as I do not study the same subject matter. The work during my internship was effectively the same as what a graduate would be expected to complete on a day to day basis.
The Company
There were times where you worked very hard and the general atmosphere allowed you to work hard in these moments and there were times where you could have a more relaxed conversation. The overall atmosphere was one that was determined by the people in your team and how you chose to interact with them.
There were 2 work shadowing sessions to experience 3 hours in another team and several learning sessions, where a presentation from another team was delivered to the whole intern cohort in our respective division. These sessions were well organized and appropriately engaging. Our IT systems, desk allocation and general resources provided were well organized.
3 Days of training before you arrived in your team that gave you basic skills and the team provided many sessions on in depth analytic skills required for this type of particular job, which were a lot more intense than the initial 3 days training. The team training was very useful and I benefitted a lot from this.
Company Parties/Events
I would very much like to work with the organization. I very much enjoyed the work I did and the team I was in. There was a high expectation in terms of the level of work that should be delivered and I felt that that would be a good environment for me to continue to learn as much as possible in.
The Culture
Yes there were plenty of social events organized by people within the internship which led to a very enjoyable experience. If you enjoy being social there are more than enough opportunities to keep you occupied throughout the duration of your time. Being in London meant there were a wealth of places and things to go and do.
Given it is in London it was relatively expensive in comparison to other areas of the country. Accommodation had a wide variety of prices all depending on travel time and quality. In the evenings there were a variety of places to go obviously with various prices depending on their location within London.prices.
Most nightlife events would end up moving into the main area of the city as there were only bars near the workplace, but with use of a taxi, it was relatively easy to get to. The nightlife in the city has plenty of options to fit any requirements you may have for your desired nightlife experience.
There were probably more opportunities available to me that I did not discover as I did not seek them out. Fellow interns organized football matches and activities for outside the workplace that depended on how actively you wanted to participate amongst the intern group. There was charity work that you could get involved with that was a rewarding process.
