About You
I really enjoyed my time at Savills. Your team immediately give you a lot of responsibility and work which keeps you busy and allows you to truly to get a proper insight into your chosen market/service. There are always events, talks and Q&As for the interns too to give a further insight into the same, or new industries. Lastly the teaching and assisting culture of Savills is very helpful. Your mentor is always there for you for any question among many more senior figures such as directors. It was very easy to learn a lot and enjoy the insight due to the design of the scheme
I think with every internship there is a level of burdening you put on your team. With all your questions and lack of knowledge you can slow down the process. But over time the way the support systems allows you to build up a good understanding quickly to be less of a burden and are given a large amount of responsibility. Savills are very good at understanding this process and the limitations an intern will have so you are valued I think.
I was in the Lease Consultancy team which requires much more support than most due to its technical depth. With such a specialised service it was quite well understood that much guidance was needed so I was not made to feel particularly burdening or bad which was very nice.
I study Politics of the International Economy, so the information I learnt was not crucial to my undergraduate. But as I plan to do a RICS accredited master I think this will be invaluable experience, similarly to my career. I learnt a lot about an aspect of property which is like no other and is key in the most of property.
The Company
The internship was very well structured. Most days we had either a talk, tour or social event which busied the interns. This is allowed us to see other aspects of property and integrate well with the other interns. Also each intern had a Mentor and Key individual to report to, who had prepared work for the intern to do before they arrived.
The general atmosphere was very friendly, nice and understanding. They understood that interns are learning, and non-cognates (which I am) have a steeper a learning curve and need more help. This was a very nice atmosphere to work, learn and live in.
Savills invest a lot of into their interns. The graduates, mentors and recruiters invest a lot of time into the recruitment and learning process. They invest resources into the events and support scheme the interns are in, as well as compensating the interns for their time (even though they did not need to).
I think the insight was massively helpful to understand a full time role in the company. The talks I have already spoken about tell you the day to day workings of each industry, as well as seeing it yourself shadowing certain individuals. The key part is the responsibility you get, interacting with other worker and agents is a major insight into the full time job of a similar position.
Savills being my third property internship of the summer I think really allowed me to understand the different culture they have. Savills is a very nice and friendly atmosphere which can be quite formal. Compared to the other firms they are very proper with each other, whilst considering their size they are not corporate at all - which I really like.
I was 99% certain my career path was going to be in property, but this only further confirmed my future.
Everything Else
There was a lot of networking and meeting opportunities with a softball social event, many talks and Q&As, and well known networking lunch being few examples.
They were very good opportunities. Although it did feel a bit competitive with the other interns, we all kinda accepted we are hear to talk to key and insightful contacts and that was the result
Yes. It was in the handout, mentioned in many talks and often brought up in the workplace.
Very much so. I learnt a lot, meet some great people, got a great understanding of a new aspect of property in a new firm, which was invaluable experience.
