The Role
1. The Summer internship programme was very enjoyable with the level of opportunity, variety and learning experiences on offer. Divisions across Lloyds Banking Group are very welcoming of interns and advocate time spent across the organisation. I have consequently spent time with Asset Finance, Credit, Risk, Global Transaction Banking and Financial Markets. These opportunities and learning experiences prevent monotonous repetition of tasks and make the internship very enjoyable. Social reps also promote events amongst Graduates and Interns.
From my experience across different divisions of Lloyds Banking Group, I was always made to feel welcome and received a great level of feedback. Colleagues are very good at identifying and promoting the talents of interns and conferring with other staff about this. Seniority and line managers are very supportive of interns.
Line managers, senior management and graduates offer a great support network and they can give advice covering many different aspects of Lloyds Banking Group. I found all staff, but in particular my line manager, incredibly useful in helping career progression and they have offered invaluable advice when it comes to this.
During the 10 weeks I found my workload to be relatively inconsistent. When undertaking multiple projects time is very limited, however there have been times during the 10 weeks where you can have a fair amount of time on your hands. I feel a greater workload could be given to interns, to the bank's and intern's benefit.
This follows on from the answer above. The level of workload and business is inextricably linked to level of responsibility. As a result, I have found mixed levels of responsibility during the internship. When there are multiple projects, with senior stakeholders, there is a high level of responsibility and this is a great experience for interns, however during time rich periods, I would have welcomed tasks being delegated to me.
The core Microsoft office skills, particularly excel, are of course very important for degree studies and even more at post graduate level. However the level of technical knowledge is one of the most important skills/ knowledge improved. This is vital when looking to go into an industry at postgraduate level. The insight into Banking practices, from credit, risk and asset finance to Global Transaction Banking, Financial and Capital Markets is a fantastic learning experience.
The Company
Due to structural changes within the banking industry as a whole, my previous line manager left the organisation shortly after I started. Consequently the organisation of the internship suffered a little as a result. However my new line manager has been very good in arranging projects and tasks where applicable.

The Culture
Lloyds Banking Group nominate a social rep for each office which works very well in grouping interns and graduates. I have found fellow interns to be very good company and perhaps that is testament to the recruitment process. Students and Graduates often meet up for drinks and nights out where work allows.
Birmingham is a great alternative to London and cost of living is a big factor. Lloyds provide accommodation for interns who are not local to the area. Socialising and cost of living: there is something for every budget. Birmingham offers a great range of products and services which means cost of living can be very cheap or far closer to London level.
Nightlife: there is a wide array of opportunities. Broad Street offers your usual large standard clubs with mainly RNB, from this selection Players Bar and Pryzm are very popular for graduates and interns. Brindley place is more upmarket and offers a sophisticated scene, with venues such as All Bar One and Wagamamas. Digbeth offers a house music rave scene with warehouse parties, OUSE is usually very good.
