The Role
Internship was brilliant. Nomura provided us with a lot of training (Excel, Bloomberg training in Bloomberg office) and networking opportunities. I always felt comfortable to speak to Managing Directors and where possible, to shadow them. Also, Nomura introduces 3 rotation internship for Global Markets which was amazing because it really helped to understand what business area suits me the most.
I am just starting my career so my work did not contribute to the profit-making activities by the business. But given my intern position, I felt fairly valuable because my desks spent their time explaining me basic things, showing me some Excel/Bloomberg tricks ect. At this point I really felt that the desk wants me to succeed and the work I produced was valuable for them
A lot of support was given from HR. Firstly, we had regular feedback discussions and catch-up meetings. This really helped me to cope with some difficult situations. Secondly, there were Mentoring scheme and Buddy scheme in place. My buddy introduced me to many people and this really helped me to network.
Very busy. First of all, we were there during Brexit. My team was super nice and allowed me to come to the office during Brexit night. I always had my desk project to do, but also I did some daily tasks for the desk and sometimes small tasks for different desks. This was one of the best parts of internship- I always had something to do/something to learn.
I would say that I was given a lot of responsibility. I participated in all weekly calls and catch-up meetings with global teams, I attended all meeting that my team was attending. I know that some other interns had a chance to attend client meetings. I think Nomura gives interns a lot of responsibility because it is the best way to learn.
Firstly, training provided by Nomura really improved my technical knowledge (Excel, Bloomberg). I know that I want to pursue a career in banking so I am 100% sure that this knowledge will be incredibly useful. Secondly, I really improved my networking skills which are very valuable in all work and business environments.
The Company
Very welcoming
Very well organised. Firstly, all recruitment process (interviews, travel expenses ect) were always very clear. Secondly, HR provided us with a lot of important information (i.e. how to set up a phone line, how to submit timesheets ) and list of useful contact numbers just in case we need some help/have a problem. HR was always very approachable so if something was not very clear to me, I always knew who to contact.
They invested a lot in my training. I would say that probably Nomura invested more compared to other banks. We had Bloomberg and Excel Training provided by external companies. Also, we had Totoro training (Nomura-specific system) and soft-skill sessions to develop our networking/sales skills. Finally, Nomura created sessions to develop our knowledge of different business areas within Nomura.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I would absolutely love to join Nomura in the future. The learning curve was very steep during my internship and I believe that it will be even steeper during graduate program. I really feel that if Nomura hires you, they will give you all sufficient training/knowledge that is needed for your success/future career progression.
The Culture
We had a very good group of interns, so we always had drinks together/went out etc
I think the cost of living was reasonable. Nomura has a subsidised canteen where you can have breakfast/lunch/dinner. Food is REALLY good. Bars near the office are not very expensive. I would say that they charge average price for London. Given the level of salaries in the banking industry, all costs were very reasonable.
I worked long hours so did not really have a chance to experience nightlife. But generally every Thursday we had drink in the office on the outside terrace (summer time only) and every Friday we had drinks at the Oyster Shed (bar next to Nomura). This was a great chance to relax and network to people in more informal setting.
Not many. Working hours are long, especially for interns
