IT Project Intern/Support Review

Extremely enjoyable! The range of tasks/projects that I took part in meant that my job was different and interesting on a regular basis. On a personal basis, I thrive of having a large amount of responsibility and the job definitely gave me that as soon as I was able to gain an understanding of the processes and systems, I could jump straight into innovating and working on my own projects - some of which required a large amount of responsibility. Throughout the internship, I was also able to work with a range of departments and attend some training sessions which gave a very good grounding in the workplace environment.

My approach to this question is the fact that team give me a large amount of difficult work and allows me to get involved with a variety of tasks makes me feel valued. From a management perspective, I have received a large amount of praise, which therefore makes me feel valued. I would say at the beginning I felt less valued, I then had to work a lot hard and give results for the team to then trust me.

I think this is one aspect that lets Porsche down, this is no fault of supervisors but the work load is extremely high and the management do not have time to give much support and guidance. The 2 week handover period provided buy the intern is crucial to this. Porsche should look into applying time every week to the intern so we can discuss any issues and support that is required.

Extremely busy, Work load within the role rarely drops off.. I would often be putting in more work and time in to get tasks completed. From personal preference I preferred this and the team seem to have a very similar ethic.

I would again rate this highly, once I was trusted by the team I was getting projects that exceeded £1000's to manage, implement and control. Sometimes there was a lot of pressure to get different aspects completed. This allowed me to cope with situations better and communicate of a much higher level. In terms of project support I was also reporting back to high level management on a regular basis, I believe this helps by the organisation being relatively small.

If this questions was based upon skills based just in the workplace and for my future career, then I would give this 10*. However when relating back to organisation in terms of my degree - project management is a skill that I really gained but there was nothing specific for example: Prince 2 training or any other qualification gained which would help towards my degree.

Like many offices the atmosphere had its high's and low's it was very much dependent upon the day and what was going on. Due to the small nature of the team one person could definitely have a positive or negative effect upon other members of the team. Sometimes the environment felt stressful and other times extremely enjoyable.

Internships within Porsche have been running for a very long time, it is very organised and interns understand the company from the start and understand what is expected of them, we are also briefed and booked in on various training sessions and events. Most interns have specific job roles within there department (aswell as taking extra projects on) these are passed over on a regular basis.

Internships are becoming extremely competitive from both ends of the spectrum, with Porsche the pay is quite low so I would expect to gain more training out of it. However, it did disappoint as a lot of us wanted more specific training within our job roles as even though we picked a lot of skills up we were never offered any skill based training or qualifications. It is understood that many other global organisations offer this.

Porsche Cars Great Britain do not offer a graduate scheme, not many interns will be offered a job as it is unlikely that there is anything available (Unless there is space available within the department). The other issue is that there is no employment links available with any other group (VW, Seat) or even subsidiary's within different markets

For the company size there are a large amount of interns who are able to get together and we had social events on regular basis. Even within the team we had regular social events from going to the cinema to going to various bars etc.

Within Reading it is effectively London prices, the cost of living is very high. However, I still had some disposable income left to therefore have a social life but at times it was very tight - Porsche will need to raise wages in the future to accommodate this.

Reading's night life is above satisfactory, London isn't too far but it is too expensive to try and accommodate a night out.

There were a large amount of activities that we could get involved in from various social events to working further with different teams within Porsche. Some which I took part in were: Drive events, WEC Silverstone with the Porsche team and working with Porsche at the Goodwood festival.
