The Role
On the student induction day they made me feel very welcome and helped me get prepared for my first day on site. Everyone in my team, when I had started on site, was very friendly and helped me if I ever had a problem.
I feel incredibly valued by my colleagues. They have every faith in my ability and have allowed me to undertake survey work alone. I have heard many compliments but also a lot of constructive criticism.
If I ever had a problem my line manager was able to sort it out. If I was unsure of anything work based then I could rely on anyone in my team to guide me on how to best approach the issue and resolve it.
As I am typing this we are preparing to hand over a large part of the works to Network Rail so it has been pretty hectic at times. I have been working a lot weekends which I am happy doing. Some days it is a lot more relaxed on site.
In my second week I was entrusted with the monitoring on site. My line manager at first wasn't happy with this as it is vitally important everything goes right and requested I be supervised. After a little while I was able to undertake the job and the processing of the data unsupervised. If I was ever unsure of something then there were numerous people I could ask for advice.
Everything I have learnt during this placement will be invaluable when I return to finish my final year at university. I have come across new ways in which old technology is being used on site. Although I didn't do the module regarding this topic in my second year I have met enough industry professionals to help me learn it. For this reason I will be using this innovative technique for my dissertation which I believe has never been used before.
The Company
There are so many characters in the office. Everyone from the boss to the technicians always has something funny to say.
The organisation of my summer placement was great. From the student induction day until now everything has gone smoothly.
They invested in me by giving me this opportunity on a salary. As well as this I also receive an accommodation allowance to help me pay for my rent as I am living away from home for the duration of the placement. Costain offer a travel allowance that covers travel to and from work.

I actually received an email earlier today saying that I have a meeting next week to discuss being taken into the graduate scheme following my final year of university.
The Culture
There have been a few social events organised by the company and the client. We also go for drinks on a Friday evening.
In London everything is more expensive. My rent for a room is over £500 a month and a pint of beer in my local is £5.20.
There are some really nice pubs around the London Bridge area. I haven't been out clubbing or to any bars with my colleagues but that's my choice.
There are plenty of opportunities but I haven't taken the time to try anything new.
