The Role
For the first half of my 8 week placement there was very little going on out on site and therefore very little for me to see and experience. This did improve in the second half of my placement.
This increased as the placement progressed and I gained the trust of my colleagues to do a good job.
The manager assigned to me was the Project Director and therefore I had very little contact with him. However, my Buddy Paul Gully could not have provided more assistance to me than he did and I found his assistance extremely helpful.
There was not an awful lot going on out on site and there was no set work for me lined up before I arrived. I filled in the gaps in personnel where required.
This increased as the placement progressed and I gained the trust of my colleagues to do a good job.
This placement provided much needed site experience that university does not offer. It was the perfect way to find out what life as a site engineer is all about. This will therefore, help me think about the practicalities of actually constructing the designs that we are taught at university and also about the commercial side of things.
The Company
Very upbeat with people always happy to have a conversation and share a joke. Nobody in the office had a negative attitude and everyone got along extremely well.
It was well organised in the sense that there was a clear structure from the L&D team and they were always available for queries. The innovation tasks were also very useful. However, line managers need to be selected carefully to ensure that they are available for enough contact time with the student. Also, students working on a joint venture need to be provided assistance to gain login details to the joint venture server if it is ran on another companies server.
At every opportunity they sent me on training courses.
Company Parties/Events
Extremely appealing due to the nature of the large infrastructure projects that they work on, their reputation for developing talent and the financial benefits on offer.
The Culture
Not particularly as we were all based at different sites dotted around the country.
Extremely expensive. Accommodation allowance was provided for students living away from home.
Good. I was located in central London next to Holborn Station.
There was 7 a side football organised every Thursday.
