The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. At some points I struggled but whenever I talked to my colleagues about a problem they were very helpful and supportive and by the end I was loving every minute.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. I was making some internal software for them to use so I felt like they were very invested in what I was making, but it was also something they will carry on using. I also felt like in discussions they valued my opinions and if they had a different thoughts on how to write something they would discuss it.
My supervisor and management were very supportive. Throughout the internship there were plenty of catch up meetings where I could discuss any concerns I had and if I had any technical problems, my supervisor was always happy to discuss them.
As I was working on my own project, I was working through my own problems at the rate I could. I wasn't pressured to try and work faster than I felt able to. If I started to feel lost I was able to ask what sort of thing I should be doing to carry on heading in the right direction.
In the placement I was responsible for making the product to fit the specification I was given. Design decisions were left to me but sometimes I was steered away from writing code in a certain way.
I've learnt a lot in my discussions with colleagues about ways of writing code and different tools. As I study maths, I'm not sure how much I've learnt will benefit my studies.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was really friendly. I felt like I could ask anyone in the office for help and they would do what they could as long as they weren't busy they'd do what they could.
It was all very well set up. They sorted our accommodation for our time there and they had all the induction meetings lined up in the first week so by week 2 we were aware of a lot of what was going on. It was clear they had put a lot of thought into how it should work.
Whenever I wanted to know more about a topic they were always keen to spend time talking to me about why something was done a certain way, how to do something or how to do something better. There wasn't much in terms of explicit teaching how to do a thing.

At this point I we haven't discussed working there again but interns from other years have recently started graduate jobs.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene, with something arranged after work at least once a week, regular activities after work every day. As well as this there was plenty of casual nights out and the interns went for a few meals and other activities.
The living on the internship was cheap as they paid for accommodation and the lunch was free. The restaurants were generally on the pricier end but as people mostly went to Wetherspoons this wasn't a problem.
I didn't really go. The other interns seemed to enjoy it.
There were plenty of activities both arranged by the company specifically for the internship (like kayaking and and welcome drinks) but also other occasions and regular activities.
