The Role
I would have liked if my team had been a little more engaging and supportive, just small things like that would have transformed the internship and made it a much more enjoyable place to work. I was very rarely spoken to by my manager and sometimes ignored, even in the morning after syaing hello I would be met with a wall of silence.
There were certinatly have some colleagues who make you feel more valued than others but thats all part of the process. You will always come across difficult people to work with and part of being in a large business such as Lloyds is understanding how to navigate situations like that.
The support and guidance was, I would say a little on the light side, it seems that there was minimal information given to my line manager in terms of how to manage the interns and support was rarely given and so alot of the learning was down to the individual
There was a wide variance in terms of how busy a day in the office would be, at the start of the internship for approximatly the first three weeks there was very little to do and most of my time was just spent reading and attempting to understand finacial reports but then in the latter stages of the internship I have been staying later in the office to get work done ahead of schedule in order to make an impression on my team in the short time that I have here.
I was given an adequate level of responsibility. From time to time it was just a case of checking numbers and reviewing reports, as a result there was only so much responsibility I could be given, but when I was given a series of projects to partake in and take full responsibility for it was hugely rewarding and something Iwish there had been more of.
The skills I have learnt here will definitely be invaluable. Working in the finance division requires some rather complex skills particularly with regards to excel programming. The skills that I have aquired through on the job learning and online modules will be useful no matter what the future holds.
The Company
There was a very relaxed atmosphere in my office, with very little stress, the head of the division is truly fantastic and is someone I wish I could have had the oppertunity to work with more but when I did get to report to her she was very helpful, supportive and generous with her time.
The organisation was reasonably poor, there were some good things such as weekly webinars for the interns to partake in but inbetween these centrally organised events the actual internship itself was poorly organised as there were gaps with no work and my manager did not have weekly 121's with me despite the fact it was meant to be part of the structre of the internship so I was left in the dark on many issues as a reuslt.
There was lots of traning avaliable for interns to undertake at their leisure via an online learning portal and lunch time development sessions. It was prehaps one of the best feautires of the internship as the resources avaliable were endless.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I would, despite everything said, like to work for the company on the graduate scheme as the other teams I worked with throughout the internship were really inviting, welcoming and made it an enjoyable experience to come to work. So I wouldn't judge the whole business based on my team as the company is vast, the chances of working in this particular division again is small and the rotations on the internship are really interesting and rewarding.
The Culture
Yes there is definatly a great social scene, some interns would like to go out at weekends and a friday nights to the clubs in Edinburgh but others would prefer to go out for dinners at great restaurants or go to the beach so it didn't matter what sort of person you were there was something for you and I have met people on this internship I shall remain friends with and am happy to have met.
Alot of money was spent on trains but in terms of everything else, food, general shopping ect. it was very reasonable.
The nightlife was good, the Edinburgh Fringe coincided with the internship, so there was always something to do and see and some teams would all go out together to a show.
There were oppertunities with sports clubs and dinners, TED talks and many other things to get involed with including an away day with golf and a BBQ which was a great addition to my time here.
