The Role
It was a great experience meeting people from different walks of life and at different levels within J.P.Morgan, all the way from fellow interns and analysts to EDs and MDs. Got several networking opportunities and made sure to experience finance from a holistic view which was easy given the numerous firmwide finance events and the several work shadowing opportunities.
I felt like a full time employee here, being given proper attention and also being delegated responsibility. I feel I have built strong relationships with my team, who have been a constant support throughout,
I had regular catch ups with my manager to track my progress and to give me advice on how I should be working on my assignments and projects. I was involved in many of the calls that the team had with their counterpart in other regions. I found the informal feedbacks given by my team very useful.
I was involved in all the team meetings, calls, project updates in addition to my business as usual tasks. I made sure to work shadow employees from related teams in my free time and was also involved in several networking events conducted by my team or the HR. All of this, along with a presentation I had to prepare, kept me busy during my 10 weeks at the firm.
I was practically treated like a first year analyst and was given to do work that the rest of the team did. I did not hesitate to ask questions and the team was always responsive and supportive to make sure that I am comfortable with the work given to me. My voice and suggestions were taken seriously and I was involved in many of the process improvements that the team is planning to implement in the coming months.
The work I did was a true practical application for the theory I had studied at university. I was able to apply and enhance my accounting knowledge and will take a set of skills that I learned here, including but not limited to, communication skills, technical skills, soft skills and analytical skills back to university when I am required to give a presentation a group of people or analyse a new process,
The Company
The environment was relaxed and friendly. The entire team was really approachable and willing to help out. Collaboration and communication between teams has been great and there are further attempts being made to make sure that each of the different finance teams are aware of the work done by other teams and that everyone is up to date with the overall progress of the firm.
The internship was well organized with regular catch ups with HR and manager. Events were set up to network with first and second year analysts and also senior people within finance. There were events like Olympics which had employees from across JP Finance and it was a great ice breaking event which allowed me to follow up on the relationships I built prior to the event. I met an associate from this event whom I work shadowed the week following the event. The mid review was properly structured and the ranking system that the feedback provided was a great way to learn areas of strength and areas of development.
A number of individuals briefing sessions, team meetings, firm wide finance training and introduction sessions, and training calls as well as JPMorgan's training central provided a great chance for learning the work. Therefore I believe that the training opportunities were abundant.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
I believe that the firm is progressing in the right direction and has been working more and more to innovate and enhance the way it works. The firm is aiming to increase collaboration further and enhance processes to focus less on manual work and more on the core things that require attention. The firm is culturally diverse and seeing my fellow interns, the firm is only aiming to strengthen further in terms of diversity. The responsibility given to new joiners enables the company to get fresh ideas and perspectives which again show that the firm is moving in the correct direction and therefore future employment prospects within the firm seem to be great.
The Culture
There are several events to bring the interns together such as training sessions, networking events, mid and end of internship social events. I have seen the interns having food in canteen together and also work shadowing each other which shows how the interns have been enjoying their time at the firm.
There are a range of places to go to and the location of the firm is such that it is home to a number of reasonable food places as well as fine dining places, The cost of living in the vicinity in areas of Bermondsey is reasonable. Being on the jubilee line, the firm is pretty accessible from waterloo and other stations.
There are a number of bars and food places to enjoy with fellow interns within Canary Wharf and Canada Square.
The interns had a CSR event and there was also a corporate run challenge. However, this is one area where I feel there could be improvements in terms of sending employees to different campuses and making sure that the future employees are aware of the firm's structure.
