The Role
I greatly enjoyed my internship experience at Barclays. Throughout my time here, I learnt a lot about the industry, significantly developed both professional and technical skills and extended my professional network. I also greatly appreciate the kindness of the people I met here – everyone was easily approachable, always tried to teach me new things and answer all the questions I had.
I truly felt valued by my colleagues. As the time passed, I was given more responsibility which helped me develop and grow. All the people treated as an equal part of the team and were willing to give me serious work, listen to something I had to say and take it into consideration.
As mentioned previously, I received significant support from both my colleagues and the HR team. Barclays has also provided me with a sufficient amount of learning materials for further development – internal team materials, training materials, internal training sessions and generally, a plenty of people around us willing to share their knowledge and experience with us.
It varied day by day and Brexit certainly had something to do with it. In general, I am certain that the team has made every effort to not only keep us busy but also provide us with an all encompassing experience. I got to work on different sectors within my team, work shadow 2 other teams of my choice and also work with different people.
I believe that I was given a substantial amount of responsibility during my internship. It all started slowly but with time, as I proved my capability, people were more and more willing to give me more work and also allow me to work independently. On the other note, however, I wish I had completed more finance related tasks.
I leave this internship feeling much more comfortable both in terms of my professional as well as technical skills. I believe this internship experience will certainly help me in my degree studies, as I will have a more realistic as well as more in-depth understanding of the financial concepts and the industry itself. I also feel I developed a much better understanding of the industry that I interned in – now I know most of the companies my team work with, most of the recent deals and financial characteristics typical of the companies that operate in this industry.
The Company
Overall, people on my floor were very friendly. I know that team dynamics varied from team to team, but my team composed of many talented people, who were always willing to help and share some positive moments with us interns. People here at Barclays are very polite, friendly and positive, which helps greatly when working on challenging projects.
The internship was well set-up. We started with a 3-day training, followed by many short learning sessions organised by HR. There were several networking events spread-out throughout the programme, which gave us a sufficient number of opportunities to meet people from across the bank. I would also like to compliment the idea of encouraging students to meet the MDs. There is also a strong female network within the bank, with several useful events available to attend.
In general, the training was sufficient to prepare us for this internship. On the other hand, many interns pointed out that the training programme was too focused on the development of technical skills, whereas in reality many summer interns spend most of the time working on slides and research. Perhaps some training on those aspects would have been helpful.

Greatly appealing. I mostly appreciate the working atmosphere that prevails at Barclays and the people who work here.
The Culture
Certainly. Overall, despite the competitive nature of this programme were very supportive of each other – they cooperated on different tasks, helped each other at the times of trouble and socialised extensively in both professional and external settings. I personally greatly developed my network by socializing with the other interns within the bank.
London is an expensive city to live in. Barclays however provided us with a relocation allowance which conveniently was paid one week after the start of the internship.

Certainly. There were many events organised by HR as well as socialising events organised internally by the teams. Besides this, all the interns were invited to participate in the volunteering activities.
